About

Heirloom quality products created on antique and self made machinery

What is the Wood Shop Mike Studio?

This is the store front of my woodworking blog. I mainly offer high quality wood turned products that serve utility and decorative needs in your life.

My products are made on a self built lathe. The capacities are Ø 54" x 18". I primarily use woods from the south east that would either be sent to a land fill or burnt. The woods that I acquire are generally from urban areas that have been removed for landscaping or due to storm damage.

What is the Wood Shop Mike mission?

My goal is to create heirloom quality goods that bring happiness to your life. I take pride in supplying top notch products for individuals to use for many generations to come.

I want happy customers. If you need a one of a kind piece let me know. I always have more items in progress or finished than are listed in my products page. If you have a particular design that you need to have realized I can accommodate that too!

Who is Wood Shop Mike?

I've always loved working with my hands. At a very young age I started by disassembling my toys to figure out how they worked. Of course, I always put them back together properly... well most of the time at least.

My passion, recreation, and fulfillment is found in hands-on activities. I feel more satisfaction at the end of a day from creating or fixing something than I do from almost anything else. As you can see, woodworking is a natural attraction for me.

I began my woodworking journey in high school. I apprenticed with a luthier and began learning the trade of guitar building. In addition to making instruments, I make furniture, and absolutely love using a wood lathe. I love using a metal lathe too for that matter...

I believe that my purpose in life is to create. I greatly enjoy sharing my creations with people. Some folks love it, some folks don't get it; that's just fine, we're all different. I hope you enjoy my work. I look forward to reading your comments and thoughts.

Regards,

Mike

Hi, I'm Mike. Thanks for stopping by. I find great joy in creating and love to see how excited people get when they admire and use my work.

I make many different items on the wood lathe. These include bowls and plates intended for food, decorative items, hollow forms, Christmas ornaments, and whatever else strikes my fancy while I'm turning.

The vast majority of my pieces are made from urban timber that would either go to the dump, be shredded, or burned.

Care for your items:

My utilitarian items are finished with food safe finishes. They can be used for serving fruit, pasta, salad, popcorn, and other great snacks. They should we washed in warm soapy water and left to air dry. Do not microwave or put bowls in the dishwasher. Bowls should be stored out of direct sunlight as to not alter the bowl's color. If the finish begins to wear, it should be reconditioned with walnut oil or mineral oil. If this item is properly cared for, it will not only be a happy bowl, but it will also last for many generations!

Decorative items should also be stored out of direct sunlight, but in a prominent area of your home or office. This will make your piece feel loved and should also make you smile. The surface can be reconditioned with clear paste wax if needed. Simply apply the wax, wait for it to dry, and buff until polished with a clean cloth.
