Weaving Wonder into the Everyday

El Segundo, California

Announcement    Woven Yogi naturally and intuitively intertwines my two passions--weaving and yoga-- together. Here’s the story…

In 1989, while studying art at the Fashion Institute of Technology, I enrolled in a weaving class. As soon as I walked into the studio full of looms, I felt like I belonged there. Since then, weaving has become both my passion and profession. I worked as a textile professional in NYC for ten years. The established home textile designer, Elizabeth Eakins, then hired me to weave her custom designs at her CT studio. Today, you can find me in my own studio where I freelance and produce my own designs.

Along the way, I discovered the amazing benefits of yoga. Yoga brought me ease and strength, peace of mind and a deeper sense of connection within myself. I’m a certified Kundalini Yoga instructor and a constant student of many branches of yoga philosophy and practice.

These two loves came together as I was meditating on the beach of the Long Island Sound in Connecticut. As I finished, I bowed to the sand over my crossed legs, arms reaching above my head, hands together. When I got up, I looked at the impression that my body had left in the sand. The outline of my legs rooting to the earth and my arms and hands forming a container for my intention created a shape that resonated profoundly within me. It was a positive symbol -- a gentle reminder to breathe peace out, and in. I call it my “Sol Stamp.” It has become the Woven Yogi logo and the inspiration for everything that Woven Yogi does.

I hope you enjoy my shop and am always happy to answer any questions you might have. Reach out through Etsy or follow Woven Yogi on Instagram (@woven.yogi) and Facebook (@wovenyogistore).

Peace out, and in

About me and how Woven Yogi came to be...

I fell in love with weaving while studying textile design at the Fashion Institute of Technology in NYC. From there I went to work as a textile stylist in New York City, working for domestic mills. Ten years later I took time off from my work to raise our children. During this time, I came to practice yoga as a way to bring strength and flexibility to my body along with a sense of ease.

In 2010 I attending a Kundalini Yoga and Art retreat at Kripalu, in western MA. That was a gateway into wanting deeper study and experience of yoga, so I enrolled in a teacher training in Fairfield, CT. I have since completed 500 hrs of certified yoga teacher training and continue my studies into the philosophy and practice of yoga.

When our youngest daughter started school, I decided it was time for me to get back to the world of weaving, and found myself weaving beautiful rugs for designer Elizabeth Eakins in Norwalk, CT. I'm so grateful for that experience because it catapulted me back into weaving that fills up my joyful castle!

Within these woven products and leather items for sale here, I have combined my love for yoga and weaving.

Here is the story for how the larger rugs you see here on Etsy came to be...
One day, some years ago, I went to meditate on the beach of the Long Island Sound in Connecticut. As I finished, I bowed my head down to the sand with my arms above my head, hands together. When I got up, I looked at the impression that my legs, head and arms left in the sand. This became the inspiration for the rug design. A couple of years later, on a family trip to Oaxaca, MX, I met Esmirna and Manuel Lazo selling their handwoven rugs. They were able to take my hand drawn design and weave a rug, exactly the way I requested. I was thrilled!

Here is a rug, made so exquisitely, merging two things that I love, yoga and weaving. I practice yoga and meditation on it every day. When I travel, this rug travels with me. The rug's high quality craftsmanship combined with all natural fibers makes it super durable and comfortable. Made with love and integrity, nature-made colors and design support you in your practice.

It is my honor to provide these rugs. It is my wish that each of us be inspired daily to work toward our fullest potential as human beings. May you always feel right at home with your Woven Yogi. May you be in touch with your true nature, your intelligent, expansive self, woven into every cell of your being.

Peace out, and in
Kristin
