Very good sound, transparent, wide soundstage, no noise at all. Hours listening without headphone listening fatigue. Delivery was ok.

If you're on the fence about buying an NHB Pocket Class A, just do it. This is one of the sweetest, most musical amps I've ever heard, and it has rapidly become one of my favorite pieces of audio gear. It pairs wonderfully with everything from T20RPs and DT770s to LZ A4s and NuForce Primo8's. XRK himself was fantastic to work with. He got down to business on my amp almost immediately after purchase, contacting me to discuss my headphone collection for the purpose of customizing the resistor network, bias current, and output capacitors. He sent me regular build updates with photos and everything. All in all, I had the amp in my hands a week after payment, and it came with a nice braided 3.5mm interconnect cable. Just. Buy. One.

This is an excellent little amp capable of driving anything I cared to throw at it with great authority and musicality (Yamaha HPHMT5, Sennheiser HD800, Fostex T50RP, AKG 712 Pro, even 600 Ohm AKG 240 DF). Great communication and a variety of component options to choose from to make your cans sing, so don't miss out, it is so much better than many 'audiophile' and much more expensive amps out there.

About

To paraphrase 17th century Zen master Hakuin Ekaku, "You know the sound of 20 transistors clapping; tell me, what is the sound of two?"

XRKAudio is storefront for xrk971 speaker and amplifier designs from DIYAudio.com.

This shop started with me designing and building a very small pocket sized amplifier that operates in full Class A mode to listen to headphones. When I made the amp, it was just a DIY project for fun. But everyone that I showed the amp to was amazed by the great sound quality and they all said the same thing: "The sound is $#%%¥@$! fantastic! I have never heard anything this good. You should sell this!"

The amp started with me making about a dozen different headphone amps and testing them and listening to them to see which I liked best. I built several world-class designs and even bought a highly rated commercial amp - the Fiio A5 to compare. The sound of this amp and another one with similar single-ended (SE) Class A topology with zero feedback kept sounding good to me. To make sure it was just not me, I posted sound clips of all the amps in a controlled test for all to hear and decide for themselves. The blind poll resulted in the same finding.

So that helped to solidify my own listening experience and the comments from folks whom I showed the amp to in person: it's one of the best sounding amps available despite the small size or modest cost.

Why does it sound so good? So let's get back to what I paraphrased from Hakuin Ekaku, the 17th century Zen master who taught his students to open their minds and consciousness by asking them this: "You know the sound of two-hands clapping; tell me, what is the sound of one?" So, I think the reason why this amp sounds so good is that it uses only two transistors in the audio path. Most op amps have a dozen to twenty or more transistors. In my opinion, the two transistors do exactly just the right things: they amplify the sound to drive your headphones with a naturalness that resembles the harmonic profile of real sounds derived from nature, and not the electron processing done by twenty transistors. A two transistor design is also very quiet - dead silence is dead silence and blacks are blacker. With Source turned off, you cannot tell that this amp is turned on if it were not for the LED and slight heat that it puts out. Its noise floor is below the -126dB limit that my measurement rig can measure. Thus, it adds no noise whatsoever to the signal.

This amp, as designed, provides a pure natural sound with a delightful presence that is lively and engaging, and a musicality that can only come from pure SE Class A is what this amp is all about. Two transistors clapping will open your mind, and relax your brain while remaining lively and urging you to re-listen to your entire music collection with it. I hope you like it as much as I do.

Test it for 14 days and I am sure that you will find it one of the best, if not the best headphone amp you have ever heard.
