XylemCreations' Shop Announcement

I began woodworking as a hobby about ten years ago and quickly fell in love with it. I focused on keepsake boxes, small furniture, and household items. I was intrigued by the challenge of working with a unique and imperfect material. Every board, like a person, is a product of both genetics and its environment. Every project is a balance between finding the perfect piece of wood and using the imperfections to enhance the beauty of the finished object.

I started making jewelry in the summer of 2011 with the idea of highlighting small flaws in wood, specifically bird’s-eye maple. The by-products of that process were boards filled with holes. In an effort to reduce waste, I began experimenting by filling the holes with colored resin. This experimentation led to an entirely different approach to my jewelry making, an approach that attempts to show the natural beauty of the wood while contrasting it with a bright, modern material.

I am a native Detroiter. I learned much of my craft through the continuing education program at the College for Creative Studies. By day I am a project manager for a software company, but my free time is spent in my shop in Huntington Woods.

My jewelry is now available at Whimsy in Royal Oak - They open on Saturday, February 25. If you are in the area come see my work in person.
