YARNSHINE: Crafted & Spun in The California Sun!
YARNSHINE is an independent fiber-arts boutique that creates beautiful solar-dyed fibers, hand-carded batts & rolags, handspun yarn, and spindle kits.
I use only the highest quality hand-dyed and commercial-dyed fibers in my shop. Each item is made personally by me with the greatest attention to detail and a true love of the craft.
I've held a longstanding love of fiber (expressed earlier through hand-made papermaking and exploration into textile culture in the museums I've helped managed). It was my move from California to Portland that spurred my journey into the medium of wool... The warmth, color & energy knitting brought to my cloudy Pacific Northwest days was life-sustaining and ultimately addictive... Knitting evolved into spinning, and my spinning opened up the amazing world of fiber prep and dyeing...
When we moved back to Southern California (and the SUN!) I quickly became involved in the local knitting community here and decided to jump in & participate in my lys' annual artisan faire. It was a blast, and from there I started teaching and selling my fibers locally (visit The Hands on Knitting Center in Redlands, CA if you're in town!).
I'm so excited about this next step in sharing my love of fiber with the creative, wise & wonderful community of Etsy. I love that here I'm among kindred spirits that cherish The Real; that value what is made patiently from our hands & hearts; that find ways to breathe Beauty into everyday life.
As Yarnshine evolves I have a strong desire to grow it in alignment with my beliefs and in support of a more beautiful world. It has been an amazing two years of growth and learning. I'm working to make this endeavor and its processes ecologically sound. To this end, Yarnshine aims to be ecologically responsible by incorporating solar dying & drying of our fibers in the warmer seasons; use responsible dyeing techniques; implement a growing trend toward local sourcing; and use packaging and mailers that are 100% compostable or recycled (made by EcoEnclose).
In the months ahead I will be working to continue on this path and experiment more with natural dye techniques. Currently, I diligently work to exhaust YARNSHINE’s dye baths until there is little to no dye left over. The remaining water is recycled and "naturally filtered" into potted plants. I am also working with local Alpaca & wool farmers to develop long-term fiber partnerships and purchase commercial fibers from businesses that are family owned and responsible community members. – It’s a good start and I hope to make further strides in these areas as we evolve.
