About

From Scientist to Jewelry Artist

Hi, my name is Janet and I have been selling my handcrafted jewelry on Etsy since March, 2009. Although I’ve always loved jewelry, handcrafting jewelry is a relatively new venture for me. I have a PhD in Anatomy and Cell Biology, and worked for various Biotech companies before quitting to spend more time with my 2 young sons. Once they were in school, I felt the need to do something creative, and on a whim I took a beading class at a local bead shop. I fell in love, all those gorgeous beads!! But what to do with all the jewelry I was making? In early 2009, a friend suggested that I open a shop on Etsy, and that’s when Yarrow Jewelry was born.

To create my jewelry I combine various gemstones (turquoise and labradorite are my favorites) with precious metal components to create simple, eclectic jewelry, with an ethnic feel. I especially enjoy using fine silver components handmade by the Hill Tribe people of Thailand. They give my pieces an ethnic, bohemian look, which is what I strive for in my work. Learning new things has always appealed to me, so I have taught myself or taken classes to learn a variety of techniques including precious metal clay and the art of chainmaille. All my jewelry is created by me and me alone, in my dining room. So fun!

When not creating jewelry, I like to spend time with my family. We love the outdoors, especially hiking, biking, camping and skiing. In fact, my love of the outdoors inspired the name of my shop, Yarrow Jewelry. Yarrow is a relatively common wildflower that is simple yet beautiful, something that I strive for in my jewelry creations.

Thanks so much for stopping by my shop, I hope that you find something wonderful for yourself, or a friend!
