About

Engineering student ensures art is still part of her education

Engineering curriculum at many colleges crams a lot of credits into four short years, leaving little room for arts and humanities beyond the required general education courses. I find that I need some sort of artsy outlet with all the math I do on a daily basis, and that's where my Etsy shop comes in.

I opened my first Etsy shop, Architectural Beads, when I was a senior in high school. I learned a lot in those six months before I had to close up shop so I could attend an out-of-state college to study architecture.

I found that architecture school didn't quite have enough math for me, so I came back home to Washington to find a new path. I wanted to give Etsy another go, so I reopened under the name Yellow Raspberry Jewelry in August 2015.

I studied abroad in Japan, and decided that I still wanted to design buildings after I was awed by some beautiful skyscrapers in Shinjuku and also Tokyo Skytree. If architecture didn't have enough math, then civil engineering certainly would.

This school year, however, I have found that maybe engineering has a bit too much math for me. I still need to design and make something that is going to awe people like I was awed by those buildings in Tokyo.

I realized that I could fulfill this artistic craving by making my jewelry business a larger part of my life. I can look for ways to blend art and engineering. In fact, there is a movement to add more arts into STEM education called STEAM (science, technogology, engineering, arts, and math.).

In order to make this change, I decided some fresh rebranding was in order, and Bejewel the Nation was born! I want to share my artisitc talent with the world so that others may enjoy a small piece of beauty and wear it, too! And, hey, who knows? Maybe I'll end up designing the next awe-inspiring skyscraper.

I've loved making jewelry ever since I was little. I am always learning new techniques and experimenting with different designs to create one of a kind pieces!

  • Mochi

    Assistant

Mochi does a fantastic job of reminding me to take breaks for play time. I don't know how I'd balance work and play without him!
