Como era de esperar, a finales del verano de 2012, se sintió gravemente enferma mientras nadaba en la piscina local. Tras una visita al hospital y un viaje de 640 kilómetros para ver a un especialista, le diagnosticaron una fotosensibilidad grave.

Verás, viviendo en Texas, el sol aprieta todo el año, con solo unos pocos meses de alivio para mi hija. Al no poder salir ni disfrutar de los placeres del verano cada año, la vi deprimirse por las actividades que solía hacer en comparación con las nuevas cartas que le tocaron, después de aquella trágica reacción en la piscina.
Decidí abrir Yippee Daisy y empecé a trabajar día y noche en fotografía de productos, viviendo literalmente de Etsy. ¿Por qué? No por el dinero, sino con la esperanza de que pudiéramos crear juntos una bonita decoración para la fiesta, ayudando a que el verano pasara sin tener que preocuparse por el sol.
Nueve años después, me encuentro totalmente comprometida a demostrarle a mi hija que puede ser independiente. No está obligada a trabajar de 8 a 5. Puede hacer crecer un negocio y verlo prosperar mientras se enfrenta a las dificultades iniciales de contratar empleados, buscar productos y realizar estudios de mercado, todo ello disfrutando cada minuto. Y lo más importante, es tan maravillosa como cualquier otra mujer del mundo.
Sabía que esto no sería tarea fácil. El primer aspecto del negocio que quería desarrollar era la fotografía. Investigué, tomé fotos y leí incontables horas, día y noche, sobre fotografía de productos. Tenía que aprovechar la poca luz natural que entraba en mi habitación (debido a los problemas de salud de Meredith) y orientarla en el punto justo para lograr la estética que deseaba.
Otro aspecto que hace grande a Meredith es que es una diseñadora increíble. Utiliza regularmente programas de diseño para hacer realidad su imaginación.
Al recorrer la tienda, ha diseñado de todo, desde pegatinas para agendas y neveras portátiles, hasta la creación de colores para fiestas que han aparecido en sesiones de fotos, televisión y películas. Como madre, es mi responsabilidad reconocer su "gran magia", como yo la llamo, y reafirmar que, como creativa, merece compartir su magia con el mundo en que vivimos.
Yippee Daisy estaba en pleno crecimiento, ya que el volumen de pedidos de la tienda aumentaba constantemente, lo que nos presionaba a Meredith y a mí. En ese momento, mi hijo Josh empezó a ayudar con Yippee Daisy, aprendiendo el proceso de elaboración de nuestros artículos hechos a mano. Nos sentimos aliviados de inmediato y, con el tiempo, Josh se dio cuenta de que estaba desarrollando su lado creativo, diseñando para la tienda con gran ojo técnico. Muchas veces, cuando Meredith y yo tenemos una idea, diseñamos el artículo y Josh se encarga de producirlo y asegurarse de que el cliente reciba un producto de calidad para su boda, fiesta o evento.
¡Qué bendición es sentir que estamos alcanzando el "sueño americano"! En nuestra empresa familiar, trabajamos arduamente todos los días para fabricar, producir y enviar productos de calidad a todo el mundo a nuestros maravillosos clientes que nos apoyan en todo momento.

My daughter, Meredith, is wonderfully artistic who unfortunately has health issues that prevent her from being what you and I would consider “the average person.”
As a matter of no exception, at the end of summer 2012 she became extremely sick whilst swimming in the local pool. A hospital trip and traveling 400 miles later to a specialist, she was diagnosed with severe light sensitivity.
This goes for any kind of light, ranging from the sun to your average light bulb, including the one most likely on above your head while you’re reading our story.
You see, living in Texas, the sun beats down year round with just a few short months of relief for my daughter. Not being able to go outside or enjoy the pleasures that summer brings every year, I saw her become depressed about the activities she used to do compared to the new cards dealt to her, after that tragic reaction at the pool.
I decided to open Yippee Daisy and began working day and night on product photography, literally living on Etsy. Why you ask? Not for the monetary rewards, but just to hope we could make some cute party decor together, aiding in the passing of summer without focus on the sun.
Nine years later, I find myself fully committed to show my daughter that she can be independent. She is not required to work a traditional 8-5 job. She can grow a business and watch it thrive while working through the growing pains that are employees, product sourcing, and marketplace research, all while loving every minute. Most importantly, she is just as great as any other woman out in the world.
I knew that doing this would be no simple task. The first aspect of the business I wanted to accomplish was photography. I researched, took photos, and read countless hours both day and night on product photography. I had to be able to take what little amount of natural light (due to Meredith's health problems) shining inside my room and position it just right to attain an aesthetic that I wanted to use.
Another aspect of what makes Meredith great is that she’s an amazing designer. She regularly utilizes designer programs to help turn her imagination into reality.
Taking a look through the shop, she has designed everything from planner stickers and can coolers, to putting together colors for parties that have been featured in photo shoots, television, and feature films. As a mother it's my job to recognize her "big magic" as I call it and really reinforce that as a creative, she deserves to spread her magic to the world we live in.
Yippee Daisy was in a period of growth as the shop order volume was steadily growing, straining Meredith and myself. At this point my son, Josh, began to help out with Yippee Daisy, learning the process of how we make our handmade items. We found ourselves immediately relieved and as time progressed, Josh really found himself embrace his creative side, designing for the store with a great technical eye. A lot of times when Meredith and I have an idea, we design the item and it becomes Josh's job to produce the item and make sure the customer receives a quality product for their wedding, party, or event.
What a blessing it has become to really feel like we are attaining the "American Dream." Our family business together works hard everyday to make, produce, and ship quality product all over the world to our amazingly wonderful customers who support us along the way!
