About

The Yoga Animalia Project: Inspired by Individuals

Yoga in Sanskrit is often interpreted to mean a union or linking together. Animalia is the Latin name for the kingdom to which we and an estimated ten million additional species belong. The Yoga Animalia Project is my attempt to link human understanding and experience to the individuality of our non-human brethren.

Yoga Animalia began with the introduction of farm animals into my working life. As a caregiver for a farmed animal sanctuary I quickly was exposed to the staggering individuality of every resident living at the sanctuary. Photographing them and their uniqueness happened organically, snapping pictures of their play and goofiness and their uncertainty and worry, all of which further supported my witnessing them as self-aware participants in the world around them. The residents quickly became part of my family, every loss felt deeply, and every new rescue celebrated joyfully. The Yoga Animalia Project began as a way to celebrate each individual and tell stories to humans about the hilarious, heart-breaking, and hopeful world of farmed animals.

This shop is an extension of how I translate their stories and use my camera to document their contributions to the world.
