The joy of learning & making

After completing a BEd Hons Degree in Art & Design and English way back in 1983 I went on to teach English as a Foreign Language in Greece, Mexico and France. TEFL teaching led to a successful career writing and illustrating English Language Teaching materials. Publications include 'I-Spy' language course for Oxford University Press; the 'Longman Picture Dictionary'; the best selling language course 'Stepping Stones' and the award winning 'Footsteps' reading books and 'Jet' magazine. So, if you’re reading this and English is not your mother tongue, maybe I helped a little along the way.

Many of my illustrations were created using collage technique, using all sorts of different materials. I particularly enjoyed working with metal and wanted to learn more about it. So, upon my return to the UK, I enrolled on a jewellery making course and got hooked. This led to making bookmarks for family and friends as Christmas gifts which in turn led to the launch of Yoojoo. This has enabled me to combine my old and new skills and I have also dragged myself (kicking & screaming) into the 21st century by learning computing skills to facilitate production - who says you can’t teach an old dog new tricks!

All the artwork in Yoojoo products are my original designs. I create the flower cards using paper tear technique; each petal is torn out and the flower built up layer by layer. I then scan the final image and re-work, layer by layer, in Photoshop. The cards are then professionally printed from my digital files. I hand made all the prototype bookmarks in brass and I now have them etched in stainless steel. I draw the Birdie cards using a Wacom tablet and Illustrator and make the beak/bookmarks from origami folded paper. I hand make all the gift boxes from upcycled book pages. So, it’s a whole mash up of techniques that creates the final products; the unifying theme being BOOKS!

I once mentioned to a friend that I didn’t wear rings because my hands were horrid, to which she retorted “You’ve got talented hands!” and I suddenly saw them in a whole new light. For me, the joy of making and doing far outweighs having a manicure!

Production partners

  • A print shop

    Leeds, England

Create coaster from my original design.

  • Printer

    Bradford, England

I work with a printing company to produce my Flower & Animal cards. They digitally print my original designs.

  • Etching company

    Birmingham, England

I work with an etching company to produce my bookmarks. They etch my original designs onto stainless steel and I receive small batch runs in snap out sheets. I carefully remove each bookmark and hand finish by filing the remaining burs.

I use your information as necessary to comply with my obligations under the Etsy Seller Policy and Terms of Use.
