These shoes will make you feel more powerful. But also really feminine and pulled together.

Hi, I’m Katherine, the owner and designer of ZOU XOU. I love this photo of myself because it totally captures me in my element, surrounded by my shoes on a photoshoot. I design all of the shoes in my collection out of my home living room studios in NYC and Buenos Aires. The actual makers are a couple of guys named Cristobal + Miguel (the head shoemakers) and Juan (the stitcher) and sometimes a few others who you can read the profiles of in our process photos. The name of the brand was inspired by the character, Zouzou, played by Jazz age actress/ Resistance spy Josephine Baker. To be honest, it’s not so much about the actual character, but about what Josephine Baker represented as a creative, empowered and forward-thinking black woman who broke barriers and inspired countless others. Plus, the name is just fun to say -- which by the way is pronounced “zu-zu”. I truly believe in the power of shoes in helping a woman to channel her own secret powers and manifest them into the world. I just want to design shoes that help other women feel like the best versions of themselves! Anyway, I love what I do. I also love traveling, dim sum, dogs, and watching films.

Production partners

  • Cristobal

    Buenos Aires, Argentina

Hailing from Paraguay, Cristobal spent 10 years working in Spain as a shoemaker in its best factories honing his craft. Cristobal now works right from our workshop in the city of Buenos Aires.

  • Miguel

    Buenos Aires, Argentina

Miguel cuts and lasts every ZOU XOU shoe. Sometimes he asks another shoemaker to assist him in his workshop.
