California Girl goes Southwest & Back Again!
Nací y crecí en el sur de California (S CA), y definitivamente soy una chica de "sol y playa". Después de la universidad, me casé y mi esposo me arrastró a Nuevo México (NM) por trabajo. Ahora, 25 años después, divido mi tiempo entre Nuevo México en verano y el sur de California en invierno. Los colores y la cultura de cada lugareño me inspiran cada día: las verdes montañas de Nuevo México (doradas en otoño), los lagos y cielos azules, el sol radiante, las mesetas rojas y las coloridas flores silvestres, y las playas, pozas de marea y el clima del sur de California. Estas son algunas de mis cosas favoritas:
Barro: Bueno, técnicamente no es "barro", sino arcilla. Me encanta su terrosidad, su conexión con la naturaleza y nuestras raíces. Me encanta su tacto: su suavidad resbaladiza en el torno y su maleabilidad en las manos. Me encanta poder tomar un trozo de arcilla deforme y darle forma de lo que sea. ¡Lo que sea! Me encanta que los objetos terminados puedan ser decorativos o útiles; extravagantes o funcionales. ¡O todo lo anterior!
Rocas: ¡Me encantan las piedras! Son como mariposas esperando desplegar sus alas y mostrar su belleza al mundo. Me encantan las ágatas por su translucidez, las geodas por los hermosos cristales que forman en su interior, la turquesa y el jaspe por sus vibrantes colores, y la piedra volcánica por su ligera porosidad. Me encanta la conexión de las rocas con la tierra. ¡Me encanta la joyería que realza estas cualidades!
Color: Siempre me ha atraído. La joyería es la manera perfecta de llevar color, incluso si tu vestuario es mayoritariamente neutro. El color es genial en otoño e invierno, cuando solemos usar ropa más oscura, y es perfecto en primavera y verano, cuando la naturaleza nos rodea. La cerámica colorida me atrae. ¡¿Qué mejor manera de añadir un toque de color a tu decoración?!
Fantasía: Siempre me han atraído las cosas extravagantes, ya sea arte, letras de canciones, objetos o poemas/cuentos. ¿Una vaca encima de una rana o una oveja conduciendo un camión? ¡Fabuloso! "¿El búho y la gata" (Edward Lear, 1871)? ¡Qué divertido! ¿Qué tal "¿Qué puedes hacer? Estás en un lío" ("Como caníbales" de Toto, 1982) o "Fui al instituto y me especialicé en verme muy mal; tuve una madre y un padre muy feos" ("Ojalá me viera un poco mejor" de The Sparks, 1983)? ¡Dos de mis canciones favoritas de todos los tiempos! Es decir, ¿qué podría ser más "divertido" de escuchar? ¡Siempre intento incorporar un toque de fantasía a mis joyas y cerámicas!
Movimiento: Cualquier cosa que tenga un toque bo-jangley me engancha: borlas, dijes, cascabeles, etc. ¡Divertido! ¡Divertido! ¡Divertido! Es más fácil hacer joyería con un toque bo-jangley que cerámica con un toque bo-jangley. Pero nunca se sabe... ¡quizás se me ocurra algo!

Born and raised in Southern California (S CA), I am definitely a "Sun and Sand" girl. After college, I married and my husband "dragged" me to New Mexico (NM) for work. Now, 25 years later, I split my time between NM in the summer & S CA in the winter. The colors and culture of each local inspire me every day: NM's green mountains (golden in fall), blue lakes and skies, golden sunshine, red mesas, & colorful wild flowers, and S CA's beaches, tidepools, and weather. These are some of my favorite things:
Mud: OK, not technically "mud," but rather, clay. I love its earthiness - its connection to nature and our roots. I love the feel of it: its slick, slippery smoothness on the wheel and its malleability in my hands. I love that I can take a misshapen lump of clay and form it into anything. Anything! I love that finished items can be decorative or useful; whimsical or functional. Or all of the above!
Rocks: I love stones! They're like butterflies waiting to unfurl their wings and show their beauty to the world! I love agates for their translucency, geodes for the beautiful crystals that form inside, turquoise and jasper for their vibrant colors, lava stone for its lightweight porousness! I love rocks' connection to the earth. I love jewelry that shows off these qualities!
Color: I've always been drawn to it. Jewelry is the perfect way for anyone to wear color, even if your wardrobe is mostly neutral. Color is great in the fall and winter when we tend to wear darker clothes and it's perfect in the spring and summer when nature emerges around us. Colorful pottery draws me. What better way to add a pop of color to your decor!?!
Whimsy: I've always been attracted to whimsical things, whether in be art, song lyrics, objects, or poems/stories. A cow sitting on top of a frog or sheep driving a truck? Fabulous! "The Owl and the Pussy Cat" (Edward Lear, 1871)? What fun! How about "What can you do? You're in a stew," ("I Eat Cannibals" by Toto, 1982) or "I went to high school and majored in looking real bad; I got a real ugly mom and a real ugly dad" ("I Wish I Looked a Little Better" The Sparks, 1983)? Two of my all time favorite songs! I mean, what could be "funner" to listen to? I always try to incorporate a bit of whimsy into my jewelry and ceramics!
Movement: Anything bo-jangley, and I'm hooked: tassels, charms, bells, etc. Fun! Fun! Fun! It's easier to make bo-jangley jewelry than bo-jangley ceramics. But you never know...I might come up with something yet!
