Handmade and Heartfelt: Life An Artisit's Inspiration

Art has always been a part of my life whether doodling in school or taking a formal art class. I considered even changing my major to art in college, but the true science geek I am I decided to stick to Microbiology and graduated with my BS in 2006. After that, I bounced from job to job trying to find a job that could make me completely happy but art has always been there. Even in science, I find the beauty and urge to draw or see the sculpture in it.

So cut to the present, I have decided to take my own advice and do what makes me happy (still doing science love it too much) and capture other people's moments as well. Every year, I have made my family something for Christmas that included elements of paint and sculpt in it. I try to do something different every year, so where else but the internet to gather ideas. Meanwhile, I still wanted to open an Etsy shop and talking to my sister I had to do something to release some stress. When I went looking for painting and sculpting ideas, I came across a painting where the two ideas were combined and it was the only one, but it made me feel so many emotions...so the idea was born. Where do I begin though?

I flushed out several ideas, then it hit me and lead me to Etsy. I wanted something that was easy to ship, but could cover a wide range of moments in a person's life that is more interesting than a traditional photo. I decided to go to Michael's and look around then it hit me. I picked up some black canvas, some air dry clay, my sister provided the painting materials, and I went to town. What hit me was what if I could make it so the picture is interacting with the person and reminds them of something personal...a fond memory, event, funny joke, etc? I started making what I would want in a gift if someone gave me one. The end result was a koi pond with a fish popping its head out of the water and a pond environment around it like a tranquil Zen Garden. After figuring out and trying different things, I figured out a method to do my pieces and still get the effect as well as detail with a quick turn around time. As each piece I have made gets finished, I am more excited and happy than before.

What about my family you say? I decided to make a few pieces for my mom, dad, aunt, and grandparents to see this is something they would like. Using the same method as the first, I tried to think of funny jokes or reinterpret memories to make an eye popping scene then wrote them each a poem on the back of the 4 x 4 inch painting. I was nervous because family is always a little less forth coming than a customer about their likes and dislikes. Well, I was surprised each piece very unique and different got rave reviews. I decided in that moment I would open my shop and title it Zen Garden Inspiration because of the first piece I made and the reaction family and friends had which in that moment of opening the gift a calmness and tranquility.

This may sound cliche but everything inspired my work from people, events, animals and just plain observations I make on a daily basis. Right now, I am just starting out on this journey but it's going to be a bright one. I am a one woman show but in the future would love to bring people in. My family and colleagues knows me as a little bit of a neat freak I like to know where everything is. Because of the limited space which is a 6 foot by 3 foot table, I do all my work in stages from concept drawing to sculpting to painting to finished product. One word here...Organized. My supplies are pretty much the same for every project but the results I assure you are different every time because no two pieces are alike.

My business is located on the Central Coast of California for now until I move. The great part is I can work anywhere because my work doesn't take up a large area and I am like a Tetris master when it comes to organizing and working in tiny spaces. In my Zen Garden shop, you will find an explosion of color and ideas. The reason I call my Shop Zen Garden Inspirations is I am trying to recreate that feeling of tranquility and beauty in that moment plus I am forever reminded of my first piece that started this whole shindig. I want to create memories and moments that last a lifetime and people will cherish possibly hand down to future generation. Art to me is something more than something pretty to look at. I want my pieces to evoke emotion and make people think. I try to seamlessly incorporate the sculpt into the painting to make the viewer feel like the painting is coming to life. My pieces are unique because there are not that many like them out their and I only produce 100 pieces a month to make sure that they are of the highest quality. The pieces are also 4 x 4 inch mini paintings that can be displayed anywhere this is why I call them 3D postcard paintings. All my pieces are handmade and heartfelt in their design, execution and delivery to you plus the shipping is FREE and fast so you can enjoy your special moment.
