About

Montana Potter

Page Kelly Piccolo is a ceramic artist who runs a one-woman studio named Zephyr Valley Ceramics. Since 2003, Page has developed her ceramic style and chased the ultimate ceramic surface in her studio which is located South of Montana City just outside of Helena, Montana.

A fifth-generation Montanan, Page was born in Bozeman and raised in Helena. Spending her young adulthood moving aroung the US - where she lived in North Carolina, Minnesota, North Dakota and Washington - Page returned home to Montana in 2002, where she began her higher education and received her degree from Carroll College.

Page is now wife to a musician and mother to a precocious daughter. When not her studio, Page is outside gardening or otherwise enjoying the great Montana outdoors.

The "Why" of what I do is an elusive one. I am compelled to work in clay. I am compelled to explore the medium and what limits I can push it to. The excitement of opening a kiln and looking deep into the glazes is addicting. The disappointment when opening the kiln to a total failure causes me to dig in my heels and try again. The things that inspire me, that I echo in my work, are botanicals and the texture of fabrics. A glaze combination that develops interesting crystals and results that are unexpected makes me crave more.

I work primarily in Cone 6 stoneware, and fire in an electric kiln in an oxidation atmosphere. My current work is focused on an interesting yet subtle surface and the inclusion of a combination of botanical photography and other iron decals that reference a vintage or antique feel. Work that feels homey and reminds of family and history. I hope the work inspires sentiment, nostalgia and feels like an heirloom.
