5 out of 5 starsIt's difficult to find wood fired ceramics. Nothing compares. This bowl is beautiful. It breathes. It makes ceramic made in an electric kiln look like something from IKEA.

About ZicklerPottery
-
Glazed work is loaded shelf by shelf into the 2 chambers of the kiln.
-
The kiln is bricked up in front and sealed with clay soaked newspaper, ready for the firing to begin the next day.
-
The kiln is started around 11am and continuously fired until 8am the next morning. Temperatures reach 2300 degrees F.
-
Wood is continuously added until the right temperature has been hit. Then the kiln is sealed and begins to cool.
-
After it has cooled for at least 3 days, the kiln is carefully unbricked and the finished pieces emerge!
Mud + Fire = Life
Not all of the pieces in my store are wood fired, but it is my favorite firing technique. I first discovered wood firing while studying at the Corcoran College of Art and Design when my class participated in a firing at Baltimore Clayworks. When I saw the results of that first firing, I knew I had discovered something truly special that would change the way I approached pottery forever.
The magic of firing in a wood kiln is really in the unpredictability of the results. Each wood firing has unique atmospheric conditions and the results are always slightly different. Because of this, much of my wood fired work includes large areas of bare unglazed clay, allowing the random nature of the firing itself to apply surface effects.
While all pieces that come out of a wood kiln are works of art, mine are designed to be used, not just looked at. All of the items on my site (even the wood fired ones) are food safe, dishwasher safe, and microwave safe. Please use them and love them as you would any of your favorite dishes, mugs, bowls, etc.
If you something here that catches your eye and would like to commission a similar piece or set of pieces in the same style, please feel free to contact me through my store or at Deborah [!at] ZicklerPottery.com. I would be happy to work with you on custom or personalized items!
