About

From no job to job I love!!

We make choices every day. Some people know exactly what they want to do with their lives, so the choices they make define how they live. Others, like me, not knowing what they want to do when they grow up, just try to make good choices wherever they go, hoping that they’ll find the right path somewhere along the way. It’s like being tossed around in the ocean’s waves, eventually you’ll end up somewhere…you just hope it’s not sinking to the bottom.

I remember daydreaming during class as a high school senior on how to arrange seed beads and what colors would look good together. Back then, my friends and I stumbled upon a store called The Rock Shop, a place that specialized in natural stones and rocks. That is where my love for beads began. I spent a lot of time there – studying all the various beads and rock chips, buying what a high school senior could afford, and talking with all the employees, who were only too willing to share tips with me on how to use crimp beads, and what malachite was. I became hooked. That tiny little shop is still there.

After high school graduation, my friends and I moved down to the Outer Banks to have the Summer of our lives. I worked at a grocery store to pay my rent, and made jewelry for six different local shops on the side. It was fun, and lucrative – I came close to quitting my job to make jewelry full-time. But the Summer ended, and I was off to boot camp for the Air Force. (And since the idea of college scared me to death, it seemed like a good idea.) And it was. While all my friends were living the college life, I got to go abroad, spending time in England and Germany, where I took advantage of every possible opportunity for travel and experience that I could. I travelled over much of Europe, seeing historic landmarks and castles, visiting museums, catching the big plays in London, Octoberfest in Germany, Jim Morrison’s grave in Paris, and even looked for the Loch Ness Monster up in Scotland (we never did find her, but did get an interesting picture of an unexplained blob in the water). I even grew to love pub food. How fortunate was I to do all of this before the age of 21? Eventually that fun ended and I was sent back to the good ole’ USA. After finishing up 10 years in the military I became an Engineering Contractor for the Department of Defense (DoD). During that time I married, became a mother of 2, got a Bachelor's degree, divorced, and then married again. And during this time I picked up beading again. Coworkers liked what I had made, then requested some for themselves. I eventually started charging for my work (though could I really call it work?). I began participating in small craft shows, then it became larger craft shows and also home parties. I picked up a part time job at a local craft store teaching beading. I grew and grew, while my collection of beads (along with jewelry designs and ideas) grew even more. Then, one life changing day, after 14 years as a DoD Contractor, I lost my full-time job – it was gone – poof! I was jobless, something I’d never felt. I’d had a job since the age of 14, so this was not only scary, but super strange! Now, most people would relish the thought of not having to get up to an alarm clock every morning and trudge into work – but not me. I’m a working person – it was not in my nature to be idle. Ever. I tried half-heartedly to find another job in the same job field (after all, it was my degree major and I had been in it so long) but I was very down-hearted about the entire situation, and with the economy down-turned, jobs were very hard to come by. My husband, and biggest supporter, encouraged me to explore Etsy. I opened my shop in January of 2013 and haven’t looked back. Etsy has changed a lot over the few years that I’ve been here, and I’ve changed with it. But isn’t that the beauty in life? If there’s one thing you can count on, it’s change. THIS is what calls me. It was fulfilling knowing that I had spent most of my adult life in the defense of my country and its people – I’m quite patriotic. But now it’s time to let loose my creative, and adventurous, side. I live and breathe this. When I design, I don’t just throw beads together. Each bead is meticulously put there for a reason, whether it’s for color, texture, or balance. I won’t sell it if I don’t think it’s right. I believe in honesty, integrity, and good customer service. I hope you will see all of this reflected in my work.

If you require faster shipping than 1st Class or Priority (found at the link above or in my "Shipping" Section), please let me know and we can discuss. I am happy to combine shipping if multiple items are purchased. If you happen to purchase two or more items on separate occasions close to one another, and if I haven't mailed anything out yet, I will combine your shipment and refund your extra shipment costs back to you. I am fair with shipping costs and do not make money off of shipment payments. Also, please ensure your mailing address is correct. I copy your address straight from your order. If your package is returned to me due to an incorrect address, you will need to pay for shipping a second time for it to get shipped back out to you.

PLEASE UNDERSTAND THAT ONCE AN ITEM LEAVES ME AND IS MAILED, IT IS OUT OF MY HANDS AND I HAVE NO CONTROL OVER IT. A USPS TRACKING NUMBER WILL BE PROVIDED FOR EVERY SINGLE ORDER. A BEAD APART JEWELRY IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ITEMS LOST IN THE MAIL. LIKEWISE, I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE IF IT TAKES LONGER TO ARRIVE THAN ANTICIPATED, ESPECIALLY DURING BUSY HOLIDAY SEASONS. ALL ITEMS ARE MAILED VIA USPS AND ONCE AN ITEM HAS MAILED, IT IS IN THE USPS' HANDS. IT IS UP TO THE CUSTOMER TO CONTACT THEIR LOCAL POST OFFICE TO SEE IF THEIR PACKAGE IS THERE. I WILL ABSOLUTELY FULFILL EVERY OBLIGATION ON MY END (TIMELINE FOR MAILING OUT, SPECIAL ORDER REQUIREMENTS, ETC.) AND IF I DO HAPPEN TO FAIL, I WILL DO EVERYTHING IN MY POWER TO FIX IT. I TRY VERY HARD TO MEET EVERY CUSTOMER'S NEEDS THAT IS WITHIN MY CONTROL.

International: I ship internationally using 1st Class International shipping. This is the most cost effective method of shipping. I purchase insurance on all international orders (this cost is already figured into the shipping). Though it usually takes 7-15 days, International orders can take upwards of 30 days to arrive, so PLEASE ensure the shipping address you provide is absolutely clear, and PLEASE be patient. If you would like to receive your jewelry faster, there are higher priority options, though they are quite expensive. Let me know if this is an option you'd like and I will give you a shipping quote. Note: A Bead Apart Jewelry is not responsible for any customs fees. A Bead Apart Jewelry has NO CONTROL over what/how much your country's customs fees are. Also, please understand that once your package leaves the United States, it is impossible to be tracked further from the USPS (and therefore, from me). If your package gets lost/does not arrive, I will try to assist in any way I can within my guidelines and policies, however it is up to the customer to contact their local post office to track it from their end. A Bead Apart Jewelry is not responsible for packages that are lost in the mail or arrived damaged. I wrap each package carefully and securely before it leaves my hands. A Bead Apart Jewelry is not responsible for packages that are returned due to an improper address. I copy your address straight off of your order so PLEASE MAKE SURE your address is correct when placing your order.

If you are ordering from the United States, let me know if you'd like to purchase insurance for a nominal fee.
Refunds and Exchanges
Sorry, there are no returns, refunds or exchanges so please be ABSOLUTLEY SURE about your purchase and ask as many questions as you need to. Please DO NOT mail something back to me for a refund as you will have to pay shipping costs again to mail it back to you. If you have questions or are unsure about color, fit or what size you should purchase, PLEASE contact me and we can discuss it - I'm good with helping folks figure out what size to get. In the end though, I want you to be 100% satisfied and will work with you to try and make your 100% satisfaction happen. NOTE: If you happened to order the wrong size and it doesn't fit, let me know...I'll be happy to restring/resize it for you at a nominal charge..just send it back (unfortunately you will also have to pay for shipping it back to you).
Additional policies and FAQs
All items come packaged in a gift box ready for gift giving. Let me know if you'd like me to include a personalized note. These are both at no additional cost.

All items are made to order. That way you get the right size and I can make other changes (clasps, earring backs, color changes, etc.).

Please let me know if you are interested in custom orders - I do them all the time.

Additional quantities are available on just about all of my items, just send me a message.

Consignment? I do that too - just let me know. Due to my lower prices, I do NOT do wholesale, however, contact me directly and we can discuss alternatives.

I guarantee my work. If something falls apart due to workmanship, I'll fix it, although I do require that you mail what's left of it back to me BEFORE I WILL SEND YOUR REPLACEMENT. I will accept a USPS tracking number as proof it has been mailed. This is a quality control measure that helps me determine if I need to change my suppliers, or my process. If there is excessive wear and tear (this is costume jewelry - please follow the instructions in the next paragraph), you may need to purchase a new piece. If your toddler pulls your jewelry off and beads fly all over, I'll fix that, too, for a modest charge.

Because of the nature of the metals used in my pieces, the best way to keep them clean is preventive maintenance. When you are not wearing them, keep them in the little ziptop bag that came with your order. Please do not wear them in the shower or while swimming (don't get them wet), ESPECIALLY in salt water pools. I just discovered they quickly rust if exposed to any type of salt water pool/hot tub. If the silver oxidizes (tarnish - all silver does), you can use a silver-cleaning cloth. They can also be quickly dipped in silver cleaning solution. I have pieces I've worn for years that still look as bright and shiny new and all I do is keep them in the ziplock bag and don't get them wet.

All pieces are strung on wire. It will kink if handled improperly. I will be happy to repair kinked jewelry at a nominal cost.

Sizing details

FOR ANKLETS: Using a tape measure, measure close to your skin where you'd like your anklet to fall (either above or below the ankle - your preference), then add approximately a half-inch. If you don't have a tape measure, cut a piece of string to the correct size then measure with a ruler. Or measure an existing anklet.

9 to 10 inches is typical size. If unsure, add the extender chain option, a 1 inch chain added to the jump ring. The clasp can be hooked into any link, adding up to a full inch.

NOTE: 8 inches is very small. PLEASE ensure this is the size you truly need before ordering. Likewise, PLEASE ensure 12 inches is truly the size you need before ordering. We can't be held responsible if you order the wrong size.

Gift wrapping and packaging

All orders come gift boxed ready for gift giving. If ordering more than one item, they will be gift boxed together unless otherwise specified (which I'm happy to do).

I will be happy to include a note if sending as gift - just let me know!
