About

Abstract Cats

I had a sewing hobby for a number of years. When my daughter was born I found it difficult to provide a quality life for her as well as balance a demanding IT career. So...I left my IT career for a more flexible at-home sewing business. It is one of the best decisions I have ever made in my life. As my daughter has grown I have had the fortunate opportunity to be there with her.

My original business started with making curtains, pillows, box-cushions and other custom decorator items. I also make one of a kind tote bags, hand bags, and wallets - often out of upcycled wool. Gradually I added custom embroidery to my sewing business. It started with a combination sewing/embroidery machine, which I upgraded over the years to combination machines that had larger embroidery areas. Now have a dedicated embroidery-only machine.

So, the kitties all started with my daughter Lauren. She makes Lucet cord as a hobby. One day I asked her to make me three cords about three inches in length. I then took these and used them as whiskers for a kitty I made out of recycled clothing as a gift for her. Lauren loves her kitty and kept insisting I make them to sell. With some prodding from Lauren, I then made a few and she sold them in school. To make a long story short she sold over 17 of them in school within a two-week period. Since then we have been making and selling these unique kitties in a local shop with amazing success!

With the introduction of Abstract Cats my daughter is at an age where she is not only helping out but is an asset to my business. She is an integral part of Abstract Cats. She handles the marketing, makes all the kitty whiskers and takes most of the photos. She manages all of this while maintaining honor roll level grades in school!

I made my daughter a kitty out of recycled clothing and her Lucet cord (for whiskers) as a gift. She liked it so much she suggested I make them for sale. I made a few to start and they have been selling like hotcakes locally!
