About

Adhesif Clothing-Made from the Heart

Originally born in Montreal, I was influenced by my mother who worked as a seamstress since childhood and later in garment production for large scale clothing distributors in my hometown.
Some of my earliest memories were visiting my mother at work. I would often sit with the in house designer there. She would ask me to pick out the colors and details of the clothing she designed.

This time is looked upon with fond memory as this and other experiences would help shape my path and my love of clothing design.

At the age of twelve, I moved with my family to Vancouver where my love for fashion and design flourished. Out of high school, I found myself working as a vintage clothing buyer for several local companies. This built a strong relationship with connections inside the “rag trade” which is where I currently source the bulk quantities of recycled textiles necessary for the use in my up-cycled creations.

Many years as a vintage clothing buyer inspired me to create garments with discarded fabrics that give each piece an original or “one of a kind” look.
There is also a double advantage in using recycled materials; not only do they reduce waste in the environment, but they also add distinctive personality to each one of my designs.

It’s not enough to say that Adhesif Clothing is an eco-friendly clothing line because it’s so so much more than just that.

Every single handmade garment has a heartbeat and a story to tell, a true labor of love from start to finish. Inspired by the preservation of our planet, each up-cycled garment is completely original and made with up to 95% recycled and vintage materials.

Adhesif Clothing is apart of the "slow fashion movement" That means we value quality over quantity. Like any other art form, this philosophy requires countless hours of physical production with the attention being on pieces that you can cherish for years.

The deeper message behind our process is very important to us and as such we often do educational workshops at local colleges, community centers and welcome visits to our studio from elementary school students so we can encourage the world around us about how to reduce waste in the environment.

After many years of continual experimentation with textiles on my own, I am proud to say that I am a self-taught designer and entrepreneur.

Aside from our flagship location (2202 Main Street-Vancouver BC Canada)
My eco-chic clothing line can now be found in boutiques and galleries locally and across Canada. Added to this I am also an event organizer for the local fashion scene and an atelier owner carrying the line of over 40 other local/handmade labels at a retail location on Main Street in Vancouver, BC.

I have been actively promoting my work, for over 10 years, at markets with Circle Craft and more recently fashion shows like Vancouver Eco Fashion Week.

My work has also been featured in local and National media and publications including the Georgia Straight, Vancouver Sun, Urban Rush, City TV-Breakfast Television, The Knowledge Network, CBC and a slough of fashion blogs and publications like FASHION and Treehugger and most recently spotted at the British Actors Film and Television Awards.

FAQ’s:

What goes into creating an adhesif garment?
Well first a great idea, then a lot of passion and last but not least persistence and a lot of hard work!
We often get asked how we go about creating our pieces and thought we would provide you, the consumer with a little bit of information about our process and a general idea of what it takes to create our very original garments.
First we hand source bulk quantities of older textiles and second hand clothing at your friendly neighbourhood thrift shop as well as scour garage sales and vintage clothing stores.
The items then get cared for (washed and dried) and then are deconstructed at the seams and prepared for use in composing the designs. Some of the fabric sometimes undergoes hand dying and the woollen materials are often felted in the process.
Now the materials can be sewn together into panels of fabric. The designs are cut from these panels of fabric and bundled in groups according to style and organized in sequence for sewing. All of the sewing is done by local, contracted sewers.
Once the items are sewn together, they are returned back into my hands for final touches like hand stitched detailing or sewing buttons.
The items are now ready for distribution at this point. They are either shipped or hand delivered by myself to boutiques through wholesale orders or sold in local markets by myself as the main presenter.
From start to finish all clothing articles are conceived, produced and distributed by Melissa Ferreira and my small team.
