A life on the look-out

I come from a long line of antique sellers and preservationists, beginning with my great-grandmother, Ruby Opal, who opened her first shop near the Texas/Mexico border in the 1950s. My parents' antique and design store is where I learned how to remove stains from homespun cotton quilts, repair antique Navajo jewelry, and connect with customers as we fell in love with these handmade pieces of history together.

Throughout my childhood, I criss-crossed the country in the back of our family motor-home as we went in search of handmade treasures. Sometimes this hunt brought us to Iowa hilltops and a barn full of antique treadle sewing machines. Other times it took us to the American southwest in search of authentic Hopi turquoise and silver. But in every instance the search was a new memory, and every object in our hands a connection to the past.

Now a mother myself, I live with my husband and our three children in Baltimore, Maryland. I preserve my ties to my childhood home with summers spent on our family ranch in the high desert of Utah where I continue to search for treasures to pass along to a new generation of people in love with the past.

I spent a good part of my childhood in the back of a motor-home as my parents criss-crossed the country in search of American antiques for our family business. Those formative years are in my blood and have given shape to Adobe House Vintage.
