It was an absolute joy to work with Adriana. She captured the fragilty and soulfulness of my senior dog perfectly. If I had a pack of dogs, I would now rush to get them all painted.
A vibrant, bold painting of your pet - just what your wall was looking for
When I was 5, my mom told me I was a good artist. The next day during recess, I told my kickball partner what my mom had said, and asked if she thought so too. ”Nope,” she replied. ”Your mom has to say that cause she’s your mom, but she’s lying.” I spent the rest of recess crying under the slide. Then I went home and drew until bedtime. Lessons are sometimes best learned as a 5 year old — particularly ones about not letting the playground bullies get you down.
Today, I’m an unapologetically upbeat artist. I paint the people we love, the places that form us, and the pets that brighten our lives. I love watching my artwork go out into the world as mother’s day packages, birthday presents, wedding gifts, and thinking-of-you treats. And working with someone to craft a painting for their own home? That’s pretty awesome too.
And now pet portraits are kind of my thing.
What began as painting a few pet portraits for gifts has become my business and my life. So, why pets? Well, because I want my artwork to make you smile. My pet portraits are peppy. They’re happy, and sweet, and (dare I say it) sometimes even cute. Depending on who I’m painting, my work can also be mischievous, soulful, inquisitive, lazy, regal, sensitive, sly, wishful, dignified, or ridiculous, but never dark or dreary. And I’m okay with that.
I wasn’t always a full-time artist.
In fact, I graduated from Princeton University in 2007 with a degree in cognitive psychology and Spanish language. Then I set off to make the world a better place through nonprofit work. After several years in the nonprofit sector, I began secretly craving a more creative life. So, I began to cook, write, and paint.
I spent an intense year getting my culinary degree at night, while working my day job, completing some food writing projects, and clocking in as a restaurant manager on weekends. That year I learned the truth: the creative life can really toughen you up. Then one day, I picked up a paintbrush, and I was completely hooked. Actually, I haven’t managed to put down my paintbrush since.
Now I live in Madison, WI with my fiance and my golden / poodle-mix puppy named Copernicus.
But enough about me, let’s talk about you. I’m big on making new friends, aren’t you? You can find me on Twitter (@adrianawillsie), friend me on facebook or talk with me on my blog.
Hello! I’m a working pet portrait artist who lives in Madison, WI with my dog Copernicus. I’ve painted over 150 original pet portraits for clients around the United States and Canada, and I have plans to paint many more.
