About

A Flame with Desire - Artisan flameworked glass from the heart of the Lakes

Using a small, gas-fired torch, I melt rods and tubes of glass to create blown and sculptural pieces. This is known as flameworking and is a traditional, centuries-old skill. The glass I use is a bit less traditional! Usually used for laboratory and scientific glassware, it is borosilicate glass - or Pyrex, also originally used for ovenware.

Borosilicate glass needs a hotter flame to melt it that other types of glass, and it is more thermally stable and stiffer to work with. In the mid-20th century, people in the US started to add chemicals to borosilicate glass to produce colours... a wide range is available today. Coloured borosilicate glass can be quite different to work with from other types of glass and requires knowledge (and sometimes luck) to gain the desired colours and effects. It's often a challenge but (almost) always fun.

I love to blow glass, and to form it to make pieces that reflect the textures and colours around us here in the Lake District. I love nature and the natural world, and have a leaning towards the quirky and different that often creeps in to what I produce.

I have demonstrated flameworking at events in the UK and overseas and exhibited in the UK. Selected artist for the US Glass Art Society Lifeforms exhibition 2013 (Beetroot with Shield Bug) and the British Glass Biennale 2015 (Chandelier with Magnolia and Blossom), finalist in the Worshipful Company of Glass Sellers' commission competition, 2015 and finalist for their Great Fire of London Schools project 2016
