About

Early beginnings and the creative process...

I am a mom who has a great sense of fun, creativity and empathy and so I began to paint and create spool people which then became spool knitters. As a family, we really enjoyed playing with these little wooden spool people, however they weren't really selling in my little etsy store. So being a novice knitter, I typed in "spool" and "knit" on the world wide web and found spool knitters or knitting dolls. I was happy to discover that spool knitters do indeed exist and have a long history. With a little help from the hubby, I now make and create spool knitters with names and stories. I have to admit, creating spool knitters or knitting dolls with a past (like most real people) is, especially fun to me. Remember to read there little biographies when purchasing. Most spool knitters evolve over time. I do sometimes decide on what I'm going to paint from a particular inspiration from pictures or paintings (real historical people also inspire me) or the spool knitter just sort of evolves through the creative process. (By the way, pictures are super helpful when I'm painting and creating custom orders.) After painting and making a spool knitter, I let the spool knitter's personality come through- what it really is: a sexy beast librarian (who was very popular by the way), saints with shady histories, star crossed lovers, a womanizing old man, a girl who has a crush on a scooter god, a sensitive clown, a jilted lover or ghost or both. All my spool knitters have little personality quirks like all real people do (some are sweet, others don't seem to care, some have a great sense of humor and still others are very serious. You get the idea.) I really enjoy my etsy spool knitting business and I hope you do too. I was very excited to be featured in a full page photo in Vogue Knitting magazine in their collector's issue back in November of 2011. :D
