About

Humble Beginnings

It started with a need.

Winter 2012. I was laid off at the start of the summer. I got a part-time job as a server at a diner. It was a particularly cold, dry winter. My skin was chapped and broken. I kept accidentally burning myself on the heat lamp in the kitchen. My hands were red, swollen and every time I washed my hands at work (which was about 100 times per night), they hurt so bad I wanted to cry.

My usual cocoa butter lotion wasn't working. Nothing was. My skin was not retaining moisture and I was worried about the scarring. The pain was unbearable.

I needed a solution-- a natural one. I keep tons of herbs on hand for various home remedies. I just needed to figure out exactly what I needed: I wanted my skin to bounce back, to regenerate quickly. I wanted to reduce scarring, itchiness and inflammation.

I gathered the herbs and infused them in a combination of oils, adding beeswax to firm it up with a bit of essential oil to finish.

My first attempt was too hard. I had to scrape the "lotion" up with a spoon and it was difficult to rub in. My second attempt was too soft and much too oily. It took a few more attempts before I finally had a salve that was the right consistency, but from the very beginning, I noticed the change in my skin. Others noticed, too.

My first sales were my co-workers at the diner. They sampled the salve out of my recycled baby food jar and asked if I would sell them some. I gave some to a friend as a gift and both she and her partner loved it.

Everyone said I should sell it. I said no. It seemed like too much at the time. I was underemployed and struggling financially. The salve rose out of necessity. It would be more work to properly package it and market it. It was enough to make it for myself and the occasional sale.

I was offered a full-time job in my field, but I am a non-profit professional. My new job, though amazing, paid significantly less than my previous position. I was still living paycheck to paycheck, but this time I had zero savings. I needed a side hustle.

Not the cutest story, but it's real and it's important. I'm a professional. I have a Masters degree, but I choose to work in human services. That's what makes me happy. And like my foremothers and forefathers before me, I'm used to making do and hustling. Thankfully, we now have the internet.

This is exciting and scary. I'm learning a lot, much more than I could have imagined. And it's fun! Researching herbs, challenging myself to come up with recipes and keeping it natural ('cause chemicals are YUCK!)...FUN!

I'm not interested in getting rich or even quitting my day job. I just want to stop stressing every month and maybe start a family in the next year. And if I can inspire someone else who is struggling to take the entrepreneurial plunge, then I can rest easy.

Hope you'll join me on my adventure and let me know if there's anything I can do to serve you better!
