Caitlin worked very hard to help me replace my favorite earrings (one of which had run away) while also making them a unique piece of art. They were quick, are gorgeous, and working with her on a custom order was a pleasure.

About

Hello everyone! Welcome to my Etsy shop! My name is Caitlin and I'm the designer and creator of Aguja y Clavo. I love beading but am slowly becoming just as addicted to silversmithing so I'm finding ways to combine both mediums.
The name of the company, Aguja y Clavo, means Needle and Nail in Spanish. My father builds adobe houses and my mother is a quilter and craftswoman so the name is inspired by them. Throughout my life they have taken me on trips to Europe where I'd see ruins, museums, and churches from the major cultural influences of each country and of Western civilization. Those trips have played a significant role in my life and in my designs. I design with a sort of nostalgia for them as I recall moments where my parents would explain to me the importance of what we were visiting and seeing. They would take my imagination on time traveling adventures that I try to replicate in my work.
From my passion for jewelry, I've stumbled upon other passions like history and literature. This trio (jewelry, history, and literature) feed off one another and my designs stem directly from what I'm reading at the moment. My life experiences have set me up to where I can visualize everything I'm reading about. I remember seeing all these places and how they made me feel and I design my jewelry accordingly. So while there's a deep sense of the past in my work, there's a sense of my own personal past in each piece as well.
I like to play with the theme of timelessness. It's an idea that applies to jewelry and style. My definition of the word means to be relevant at any point in history and well into the future. I want my pieces to be the items that are treasured in the future, the sort of jewelry that gets handed down. I want my work to be the unique item that defines a woman's character and style but that also makes her feel connected to her past and to the women who get to inherit her jewelry in the future.

I've been doing beading since I was 15 years old and recently started metal smithing. I create my jewelry to be wearable pieces of art that are an exploration in materiality, craft/technique, and influenced by American Southwest craft culture.
