About

Handmade unique wedding and bridal jewelry.

Aide-mémoire Jewelry is bespoke gold and palladium wedding bands and engagement rings, using recycled materials in an eco-friendly studio. Aide-mémoire Jewelry is designed by Aran Galligan in Seattle, Washington.

The term aide-mémoire (aid memoir) is literally translated to memory aid, and is often used to refer to notes that are taken in order to jog one’s memory later. In that way same way your ring acts a reminder for that important moment in your life.

As the founder of Aide-mémoire Jewelry, Aran is inspired both by principals of modern design – functionality, truth to materials, and beauty through simplicity – as well as an aesthetic value of the Japanese, called Wabi-sabi, where beauty often lies in the imperfect mark of the hand. This aesthetic celebrates the beauty in the slight imperfections of nature. It accepts the process of growth and decay, valuing modesty, simplicity, humbleness and integrity of purpose. These principles are integral to Aide-mémoire Jewelry’s unique handmade creations.

Each ring is custom made to order. Aran’s techniques merge tradition and the latest technology – utilizing everything from time honored metalworking skills to computer-aided design. Aide-mémoire Jewelry uses 100% recycled precious metals -- recycled and lab-grown diamonds and gemstones in a low-impact studio environment. All packing materials are reused and reusable, recyclable and compostable, with a minimal use of plastic.

Aide-mémoire Jewelry makes monthly contributions to the following organizations:

Please read this post about ring sizing:

We recommend that you have your finger professionally sized multiple times before ordering a ring. We use the "True Size" ring sizing system, so getting sized with that system will give you a more accurate size. I make the ring to the size that you request, but can not promise that the size you requested will fit you. Please be aware that sizing engraved rings can damage the engraving.
Additional policies and FAQs
When placing an order, filling out the "message to seller" section with any special instructions that we discussed in email, is very helpful to us. The message to seller shows up on the invoice, which we refer to often in the ring-making process.

o---------{ Info on Precious Metals }---------o
--------------------------------------------------------------

:: Eco-friendly Metals::
We use 100% recycled metal for all of my wedding bands. These metals share the beauty of mined precious metals but are recycled and eco-frendly. Production of one gold ring from non recycled sources will generate five tons of environmental waste, contaminating water and lands which endangers the health and lives of humans and animals. All precious metals at the refinery, that we buy from, are recycled from non-mined sources such as reclaimed jewelry, silverware, precious metal coins and scrap. They do not buy any metal from mining companies.

:: Gold Alloys ::
24k gold is pure gold, and is a extremely soft and malleable metal. For jewelry, gold is most commonly seen in 18k, 14k, and 10k alloys, where pure gold has been combined with other precious and non-precious metals (alloying). This alloying makes gold stronger, harder and more durable. It also is what gives gold its amazing range of colors. The carat denotes the amount of pure gold in the alloy. 10k gold is 10 parts pure gold mixed with 14k parts other metal. 14K gold is 14 parts gold mixed with 10 parts other metal. 18K gold is 18 parts gold mixed with 6 parts other metal.

:: Yellow, Rose and Green Gold ::
Yellow, Rose, and Green Gold are all alloys of gold made up of pure gold, pure silver, copper, and zinc, but the proportions of the metals vary to create the different colors. Green gold contains more silver, rose gold more copper.

:: Royal Yellow Gold ::
Royal Yellow Gold is a European colored gold that is slightly more green in color than traditional yellow gold. Royal Yellow Gold is made up of gold, copper, silver and zinc.

:: White Gold ::
Commercial white gold rings have been rhodium plated, so they look almost chrome, and the plating will wear off over time. Plated rings need to be re-plated every 1-2 years. We don't plate any of my rings, because I feel that it is dishonest to the material. 14k white gold looks like a very lovely pale yellow, almost like French vanilla, whereas 14k yellow gold is a more buttery yellow. Traditional white gold contains nickel, which is a common allergy.

:: Palladium White Gold ::
Standard white gold contains nickel, so is not a good choice if you are allergic to nickel. Palladium white gold does not contain nickel, but is more expensive than standard white gold. The color is also slightly different than regular 14k white. Palladium is a much grayer metal, so 14k palladium white looks cooler in tone than traditional 14k white.

:: Palladium ::
950 palladium is 95% pure palladium. Palladium is a metal in the platinum family, and shares many characteristics as platinum - durability, tarnish resistance, and is hypo-allergenic. It is a precious metal, and in addition to being used in jewelry, is has often been used in catalytic converters. It is a “white metal” that is slightly more gray than platinum or sterling silver. Palladium is less expensive than platinum or white gold, but very durable.

:: Sterling Silver ::
Sterling silver is a pure white colored metal and an inexpensive alternative. However, sterling silver is a very soft metal in comparison to gold, platinum and palladium. Since wedding rings take a lot of wear and tear, a sterling silver ring will scratch, ding and lose its shape much faster than other precious metals. Thicker bands (1.5mm or 2mm thick) will hold their shape longer than a 1mm band. Sterling Silver and Palladium Sterling can tarnish, however wearing your ring everyday typically will prevent tarnishing.

:: Sterling Palladium Silver ::
Sterling palladium silver is a 925 sterling silver alloy which contains 3.0% palladium and 92.5% pure silver. It is harder than standard sterling silver and is more tarnish resistance, but not as hard as 950 palladium or 14k gold. It is slightly more grey and has a little more luster than traditional sterling silver. Sterling Silver and Palladium Sterling can tarnish, however wearing your ring everyday will prevent tarnishing.

:: Platinum ::
Platinum is the most expensive of the precious metals. It is a very strong, durable and white metal. 950 platinum is 95% pure platinum. It is naturally a very white metal, so is not usually rhodium plated. Platinum is more durable than other precious metals, so it lasts longer with every day wear. Platinum is heavier than other precious metals, won't tarnish, and is hypo-allergenic.

o------------------{ Conflict-free }------------------o
--------------------------------------------------------------

:: Recycled Diamonds ::
A recycled diamond is a naturally occurring diamond, cut & polished from mined rough, previously set in jewelry then removed, and re-introduced into the supply chain for resale.

:: Lab-created Diamonds ::
Lab-created diamonds are real diamonds in every sense: chemically, physically, atomically and optically. Laboratory grown diamonds on the other hand only use a modest amount of electricity and resources, and do not fuel war and human rights abuses.

:: Moissanite ::
Lab-created Moissanite is a near-colorless jewel made from silicon carbide (SiC) based on natural Moissanite. Naturally-occurring Moissanite is an extremely rare mineral found in limited quantities or as small particles in the earth. Moissanite is a very hard and durable gemstone, second only to diamonds. It has more fire and brilliance than diamonds.

Free Re-sizing

If you find that the size you requested does not fit as you’d like, and would like it re-sized, we offer one free re-sizing per ring, on band rings without stones, up to 1/2 size (larger or smaller), within 90 days of receiving the ring. You are only responsible for shipping both ways. Beyond that rings can be re-sized for a fee. Please contact us before sending a ring back for re-sizing. **Re-sizing is only to adjust the ring size. We can not adjust the width or thickness of a band after making it.**

We recommend that you have your finger professionally sized multiple times before ordering a ring.

Finishes and Patinas

During the normal course of wearing a wedding band, the appearance will change as the surface starts showing signs of wear. All finishes and patinas are a surface treatment, and will change over time. Rings take a lot of wear and tear, so a shiny finish will become less shiny and a matte finish will become more shiny. All rings, regardless of the metal, over time, will have scratches and dings. Some metals are softer, so it will happen faster (like sterling silver), and other metals are harder, so it will happen slowly (like stainless steel). The actual time that a finish lasts depends on the activity level of the wearer, so finish may last two or three years for some people, but only a few weeks or months for others.

Shipping

If you are ordering a ring for your wedding, please indicate wedding date in message to the seller. Please see item description for lead-times (processing times). Actual delivery time after item ships will depend on the shipping method you choose.

Standard shipping for domestic orders is USPS First Class. All shipments come with tracking and insurance. Domestic shipments also ship with signature confirmation.

Sizing details

Please read this post about ring sizing:
http://aidememoirejewelry.com/blogs/news/9990425

There are several factors that can affect ring sizes. Fingers can change 1/2 to whole size depending on temperature, activity level and time of day.

Wide bands (6mm or more) fit tighter than narrow bands. Find out, if whoever sized your finger, took this into consideration. If you are ordering a band 5-6mm wide you may want to go up 1/4 size, and 7-8mm wide you may want to go up 1/2 size.

We will send you the ring size you ordered, however we can not determine your ring size for you without seeing it in person. All rings are documented on a ring mandrel before being shipped to insure that the ring is the size that you requested.
