I like small things.
While working on my degree in biology, art & french, my college advisor would often muse on what I could possibly do job-wise that would combine all areas of my studies, which seemed bizarrely unrelated to most. He finally came up with an illustrator for French medical texts. Quite creative reasoning, but not quite where I ended up going!
After living in cities & overseas, I landed in the bucolic hills of Vermont. In the small town where my husband & I have put down roots, I met a fellow artist who had studied scrimshaw with a master scrimshander while living on Nantucket Island. The process greatly intrigued me.
As an artist I have always preferred drawing, having a predilection for simple line & form, with a love for small, detailed work. I like to see the hand in things, & appreciate & play up the wabi-sabi inherent in working with natural materials. As a lover of all things loved & worn & with a story to tell, I welcome imperfections & work them into my designs. Anatomy & biology, & language & the marks we make to communicate have all held a lifelong fascination for me, & inspire my creative process. Scrimshaw is a medium that satisfies all of these things.
I strive to create create pieces that are modern, simple & beautiful, while practicing a traditional & ancient craft.
In 2010 I opened up my first online shop, akimbaMade.

I make a small number of scrimshaw pieces of the same design, each drawn & etched free-hand, so not two are exactly alike.
All items arrive ready for giving in a box with a hand-stamped gift tag, or as a lovely present to yourself.
