Announcement   Update: Febr 16-20 all is well, they don’t need me.
For the next month, February 16 - March 16, I am on call for federal jury duty and won't know until Friday evenings if I will have to make a trip to Juneau or not the following week.
So if the shop suddenly goes on vacation, that is why. If you have an order, it may be delayed due to this, just so you know and I will contact anyone waiting for an order, if and when this happens. Most of the time it's just biting nails and never have to do anything more than make that weekly phone call.
Handmade Red Cedar Boxes and Much, Much More
made of locally harvested Western Red cedar, salvaged from the Tongass National Forest and milled by local family owned sawmills on Prince of Wales Island in Southern Southeast Alaska. Each wood product has been sanded, lacquered, designed and fabricated by my self. A 30 watt CO2 laser does all the cutting and engraving and is where the light happens.
It's brilliant!
Spoiler Alert: Your box or cedar item may not look exactly like one in the photo. Every item is made as it is ordered. So each is unique.
I try to match wood, but the dark colors go faster than the lighter ones and I can't only use dark cedar all the time. I have to use what I have, when I have it and how it comes to me from the sawmill.
*** NOTE***when you first open your package, there may be a strong acrid and/or smoky odor from production ( wood smoke and the finish). This gets trapped in the packaging during shipping, but should dissipate within a day or so. Leave it open in a well ventilated area.
If you have sensitivities to caustic oils, red cedar has them and can cause allergic reactions. If you experience difficulty breathing or develop a contact skin rash, go see a doctor and let me know! I'll refund your item and postage upon return.

Visit me and share your thoughts, ideas and suggestions on my Facebook page : https://www.facebook.com/AlaskaLaserMaid
You are free to share photos of your purchases too. I'd love to see where they are now.

Thanks for stopping by, come back again soon.

About

How Alaska Laser Maid came to be

I got a part time job doing cool stuff for Bill MacCannel, the owner of Alaska Laser Craft in 2003, I think, he taught me everything I know about using the laser to cut and engrave wood, stone, plastics, glass, leather, vinyl, rubber and what ever else people came into the shop for us to engrave.

In 2006, his wife got very sick and they had to go 'south' (to Washington state) and left me in charge. To make a long story short, he decided that he didn't want to live here anymore or run the shop after his wife's death... so I bought it from him and had to change the name in June 2007.

Then I had a hard time getting finished sanded wood, because the guy who did that was tired of doing it... so I bought his 13 inch wide belt sander and dust collector from him and started sanding my own boards. All the wood is mostly salvaged logs from old logging areas here on Prince of Wales Island and is milled at local family owned sawmills.

And now years later, here I am, doing everything I did when I was then, plus a whole lot of other things. My laser is at my real life shop in the town of Thorne Bay, about 12 miles from where I live. So that is where I do most of the design, laser cutting and engraving, then I take it all home with me at the end of the day and do the finishing, lacquering, put it all together and bring it back in to pack and mail out.

My inspiration comes from my surroundings for the most part and imagination and general quirkiness. Sometimes the patterns of the wood inspire something, sometimes it's artwork or seeing things and thinking, "I could do something like that!, sometimes people give me ideas, sometimes I make mistakes that turn into other things. I do have templates that I've created for runes and boxes using Corel Draw and a 35W laser. Some times I get to use my own artwork, sometimes people send me theirs, often I find awesome things at clipart place I'm subscribed to. So ask about artwork you'd like to see and I'll see what I have or can find. It is so much fun making something new and different and that is why I'm here. I love my job!
