WOW! This historic print is impressive! Compliments from everyone when I took it in for archival framing. So much detail! My son will be able to enjoy this at home in Canada after he returns from living in Edinburgh. It's going to frame up beautifully and be treasured for a long time! Fairly quick international delivery. Safely sent in a sturdy tube with valuable instructions. I would certainly visit this shop again! Many thanks!

About

Edinburgh based fine art printing service.

I believe I can offer a truly unique approach to printing; I care about the detail of each individual image produced, I take time to proof images to collaborate with artists to 'get it right'. I aim to delight my customers with tenacious high standards, I am a stickler for perfection and really enjoy working with like-minded artists.

With my company "Alden Fine Print & Co." I prefer to work on large limited edition runs, rather than individual prints due to the amount of time involved in proofing fine art work. However, Etsy allows me to offer a straightforward service to a broader audience and I'm delighted to provide the same 'gallery quality' prints to you.

The combination of pigment ink and acid free matt papers are lightfast for a minimum of 100 years under glass.

Introduced to Etsy and inspired by its wonderful users, community and quality I'm excited to offer a wider audience the finest prints available,

Frequently asked questions

🔎 What does 'Giclée' or 'Museum Quality' mean?

'Giclée' is a loosely used term which often describes printing at a high resolution with accurate colour. The term is not maintained by any international body and you should be aware that not all giclée prints are created equal!

I use the term 'Giclée' along with 'museum quality' in promotion and on my website, as it is widely understood and requested by artists when they want high quality prints.

The technical term for what I produce is Archival Pigment Print.

So 'Giclée' or 'Museum Quality' = Archival Pigment Print; which is a long lasting print made with ink that won't deteriorate and paper than doesn't discolour... for a minimum of 60 years.

📜 What is 'Fine Art' or 'Archival' paper?

'Fine Art' paper refers to paper that has little or no acid content. This material will hold pigment colour for a LONG time, unlike photo paper which tends to fade or deteriorate.

Our 'Fine Art' papers hold the original printed pigment and clarity for a minimum of 60 years. That means what you're buying is an investment, not a short-lived piece of 'wall art'.

I print on Hahnemühle, 300gsm Matt FineArt – smooth or textured† heavyweight card, its a cotton based acid free paper, which guarantees 'Archival' standards expected by galleries and museums.

This is one of the most highly regarded fine art papers used by professional artists and museums. I know you will love your print, and delight in it for years.

💧 What is 'Pigment Ink'?

Pigmented ink is made from particles of pigment suspended in liquid, when printed the pigment settles into the tiny fibers that make up fine art paper. As the ink drys, the pigment particles get stuck in the fibers.

Pigment is very long lasting, in a museum archive (out of UV light) pigment ink can last 400 years without any noticeable change.

Epson guarantees archival standards for a minimum of 60 years with the inkset and paper combination used. This is based on a framed print behind glass out of 'direct sunlight'.

My aim is to create true likenesses of an original work, a likeness that will not diminish or fade over time, pigment inks offer the only way to truly achieve this.

🔎 Your vintage prints look 'dirty' do you restore them?

These giclée prints are made from digitised originals (scanned at high resolution). Many of the atlases and town plans were originally folded. I DO NOT remove these fold marks, minor scuffs or torn parchment. I think these details add to the 'vintage' look and feel of the reproduction.

There are companies online who offer antique maps which have been 'restored', I can't say I'm a fan of this style.

It should be noted that the colours displayed online are an approximation and won't match the print when you hold it in your hands. This is due to the mismatch between colours that can be displayed on a computer screen and those that can be reproduced on paper.

✂️ Can I order a 'Custom Size' print or add a margin?

You may request to add a blank margin to be the final print size. Allowing for a professional framer to create a mount for your poster, please contact me to arrange this as I DO NOT include any margin for mounting as standard.

I would be very happy to create a 'Custom Size' print for you. Please contact me to discuss options before ordering.

⏳ What is 'Processing Time'

Each order is custom made. 'Processing Time' refers to the time it takes me to print your order, dry the print and package for delivery.

Standard processing time is 1-3 working days, postage is then made with Royal Mail within the UK (or passed to other ground-based service for the rest of the world).

For bulk purchases FedEx can be arranged, please contact me before purchasing to discuss additional costs for wholesale as bulk discounts are available.

See: "What are the delivery / shipping options?" below for descriptions of the various delivery services I use.

⏳ When will I receive my order?

You view estimated shipping times alongside my shop policies:

Postage is made after processing (ie. printing) is complete.

Buyers are responsible for any customs and import taxes that may apply. I'm can not be held responsible for delays due to customs, please check whether the item you are purchasing will accrue customs charges in your country.

Customs delays CAN occur. It is not unheard of for an item to remain in customs for many days or even weeks. Please contact me if you are concerned, I am limited to what I can do however. After 28 days an item can be considered 'lost', if insured I will offer to send a re-print.

Your print will NOT be delivered framed. I do not offering framing, nor can I offer a mount. The image shown in my listing is for illustration only.

If you're based in the UK I can recommend a wonderful Edinburgh based company called "Frame Works" http://framework-edinburgh.co.uk who manufacture the most wonderful archival frames, for museum quality they really are the people to talk to.

Alternatively, in the UK "John Lewis" offer ISO A-size photo frames of good quality.

For a less expensive, off-the-shelf option; Amazon stock frames to suit the majority of my prints. ie. just search for "A1" or "A2" photo frames.

And this is a really great design also: http://www.thabto.co.uk/products/magnetic-print-frames

🚀 Do you offer a priority / expedited print service?

Yes, I can offer expedited printing. If require your print urgently I can arrange to expedite the processing time.

I can often print and dispatch within 24 hours of payment if pre-arranged.

Ideal for a last minute birthday gift!

Please contact me before purchasing to confirm additional costs for this service, standard processing is 3 working days + postage.

That means, with standard delivery in the UK) it can take up to 4 working days, if your order is placed before 5PM (GMT), before you will receive your item.

Upgraded service is available worldwide, with FedEx.

† Specific availability of fine art paper:

When producing 'Giclée' prints I always print on Hahnemühle Matt FineArt – smooth or textured paper stock. Regarded as the best archival paper available.

However it should be noted I do use different variations of their stock: ie. Photo Rag (I'll print on either a Bright White / Ultra Smooth / Natural finish) depending on the image I am reproducing. I also occasionally reproduce work on textured Hahnemühle stocks if the image I'm printing lends itself to that paper.

If you are keen to order on matching Hahnemühle material (for example you're placing an order for several items at the same time) I don't mind doing this.

Please understand this may lead to a longer processing time.
