About

Hand Carved Woodblock Prints

I first started making woodblock prints eight years ago, needing a way to decorate the handmade kites I was also learning to make. I liked the directness of printmaking and the fact that I didn't need a huge art studio to do it. Right away though I was struggling to find a direction in which to go.

About six years ago I discovered, through Etsy, a handful of other woodblock print artists who inspired me to reacquaint myself with a subject I'd let fall by the wayside of my childhood...birds and natural landscapes.

These days I spend as much time as I can exploring the wild spaces, big and small, near and far from my home in northern Illinois which I share with my wife and three cats. While not as scientific as I should or could be, I try to capture the more emotional side of what I find in nature, focusing on imagery and hoping to carve out the beauty of it which always surprises me.

All my woodblock prints are made using a technique based on the Japanese Moku Hanga style. First a drawing is brushed in sumi ink on thin tengucho paper. After drying, the drawing is carefully glued to a block of solid wood, usually cherry. Once the glue has dried, I carve out the drawing through the paper and into the wood. After the drawing has been carved out, the block is wet down and the remaining paper is rubbed off. Once the block is completely clean and dry, it is inked with either water based or oil based ink. The inked block image is then transferred to paper by laying paper over the block and rubbing the back with a disc called a baren. The pressure of the baren is manipulated to either print evenly or to produce textured effects in the final print.

So here I am now and here is my shop. I hope you enjoy it and I hope you take the time to look at the work of the other etsy artists who so inspire me... If it wasn't for their work, there wouldn't be my work so I hope you check them out.
