Friends for Friends

When I first opened my Etsy shop in 2011, I sold a few things but quickly realized that I was much too busy with grad school (in counseling) to give my Etsy shop enough attention. Now it's 2014 and I'm working as a therapist part-time and doing art and taking care of my kids the rest of the time. It's taken me awhile to achieve this goal, and I'm really happy to reopen my store.

When I was a kid, I experienced a turbulent childhood. I used to have nightmares until I found a magic cure--reading Charlie Brown books before bedtime. I also realized that I felt better when surrounded by art supplies and drawing pads. I often drew a cartoon bear who wore a bow tie. Strangely but truthfully, I thought of this bear as my friend. As soon as I saw his face emerge on the paper, I instantly felt safe and calm. This magical feeling still happens every time I do art.

My artwork is not refined but it is sincere. For me the work celebrates the perfection inherent in imperfection. I put compassion, affection, and humor into each piece I make. I hope and believe that they exude these qualities.

In this way, being a therapist and being an artist are similar for me. In both pursuits, I aim to help create a space where people feel safe and special. If I could say something to the person who buys my work, it might be, "Even though I don't know you, I care about you. You are important."

I sell two books which are not handmade, but I wrote and self-published both of them. One is a cookbook that I created with my older son when he was about 10. He was a picky eater at the time (now he'll eat everything in the house). "An Alien Robot's Cookbook" includes recipes that we tested and he enjoyed, and drawings that he made. I used to own a cafe which my friend and I called the Delta of Venus. A lot of the recipes come from that time. My other book is called "Pre-Paxil Poetry" and it stems from the dreams I had prior to starting anti-anxiety medication.

I hope you enjoy my shop as much as I enjoyed making everything in it.
