aller-retour vintage

In the 25 years I've been buying vintage clothing and accessories, I've gotten in the habit of purchasing great pieces to "rescue" them from a garage sale or thrift store, even if they didn't fit me. I'm thrilled to use this shop as a means of getting these items into the hands of someone who will adore them (and to clear out my attic of all these items I sadly can't wear!).

Although you'll find a bit of everything in the shop, you may notice I have a special fondness for shoes... in every color, shape and size, they are my kryptonite. Handbags run a close second, and scarves are not far behind.

In addition to collecting vintage, my other great passion is food and cooking- if you're interested, check out my food blog, "simmer down!" ( I also love travel and languages (especially French), as you may have gathered from the shop name.

The shop had been on hiatus for a while, but as I recently left my day job to pursue freelance writing, I am also now able to devote more time and energy to Etsy. It's great to be back!

I've been buying vintage since age 13, when I used to take the bus to Somebody Else's Closet in East Lansing. If only I still had the Victorian lace bloomers I bought there! Although my style is ever-evolving, vintage will always play a major role.

Shop policies

Last updated on September 3, 2012
Thank you for visiting Aller-Retour Vintage! I want you to be completely satisfied with your purchase, so I do my very best to describe my items and any minor flaws they may have. However, please keep in mind that these are previously-loved items, and unless specified as "never-worn", will likely show a little wear. For info on the rating of condition of vintage items, please refer to the chart under "Additional Information". I hand-wash or home dry-clean all fabric items prior to selling when possible; shoes are cleaned with leather cleaner and/or a damp cloth where applicable. My home is smoke-free and pet-free.

Please feel free to convo me with any questions.

Accepted payment methods

Accepts Etsy Gift Cards and Etsy Credits

Returns and exchanges
I do my best to accurately describe and photograph my items, as well as provide measurements. See below for an explanation of the vintage rating system I use.

Returns/ refunds will only be allowed if I have made an error in the item's description (wrong measurement given, for example) or overlooked some major flaw. If you have an issue with an item you've ordered, please convo me prior to leaving negative feedback and we will try to work something out!
I accept payment by credit card, Paypal, check, or money order.

If you are paying by check or money order, please convo me to let me know, and mail payment within 48 hours of your purchase.

If I do not receive a credit card or Paypal payment within 48 hours of your purchase and have not heard from you regarding other payment arrangements, your order will be cancelled.
**Do you live in Metro Detroit?**
Convo me, I may be able to drop off your item(s) or have you pick them up and avoid shipping charges! Transactions will still take place on Etsy, but I can adjust your invoice or issue a refund for shipping.

For everyone else:
Your item will be shipped within 2 business days of receipt of payment. Generally, I ship whatever method is least expensive, so let me know if you need expedited shipping, delivery confirmation or insurance and I can adjust your invoice. I am not responsible for any loss or damage of items during shipping, and can provide my Post Office receipt with your zip code as proof that I shipped your package. International customers are responsible for any customs fees, etc that your country may add.

Bear in mind that shipping charges take into account packing materials and my time to pack & go to the Post Office; that said, if I have wildly over-estimated the shipping costs, I will consider refunding some of it back, especially for multiple orders with combined shipping.
Additional policies and FAQs
Sizing info:
To ensure a good fit, it is recommended that you know your measurements, and compare measurements of your own clothing to those in the listings. If you need additional measurements that are not listed, just ask!

For clothing:
Please bear in mind that the measurements given are that of the item, not your body! So, for example, if you have a 34" bust and a button-down blouse has a 34" bust measurement, you'll likely be straining the buttons a bit, whereas with a knit top you'd be fine. Ditto for hips- unless it's a form-fitting knit dress, it's best to allow an inch or so extra for movement.

For shoes:
Shoe length and width measurements are taken inside the shoe. My best advice is to measure a pair of well-fitting similarly styled shoes as a point of reference. Keep in mind the style of shoe- for example, a pointy shoe will measure a lot longer than your actual foot measurement.

Vintage Condition Rating Scale (taken from the Vintage Fashion Guild):
Mint: Perfect, pristine, no signs of wear.
Near Mint: Like new, no flaws to report.
Excellent: Has been worn, no flaws to report.
Very Good: Noted minor flaws, easily repairable or already repaired, wearable as purchased.
Good: Noted minor flaws, most likely repairable or already repaired, wearable with care or after repair.
Fair: Numerous noted flaws, some significant, possibly repairable/wearable.
Poor: Damaged beyond repair with value as a study piece, not wearable.

A note about Etsy's 20-year rule for vintage:
Etsy requires all items listed as Vintage to be over 20 years old. I do my very best to accurately list the era my items come from, using style, fabric, fonts on the label, type of stitching/ zippers, etc. as indicators. I pride myself on estimating clothing eras fairly accurately, but at times if an item is homemade or missing tags, it can be difficult to determine. If you think you spot an error, by all means let me know!
