One Bead at a Time

Isn't glass wonderful? I was simply blown away when I saw my first lampwork bead. It was something I was meant to do. My husband built a studio area in our basement for me in 2004. It was so much fun creating countertop space for my torch, kiln and glass supplies. A few more counter tops and many supplies later I am still amazed at the different reactions of glass when submitted to the intensity of the flame. Since then I've been happily melting glass and learning all I could about the things that can be done with glass beads.

The beads go right from the torch into a kiln, where the annealing is controlled with a digital timer. As the beads cool in the kiln, the annealing process allows any internal stresses in the glass, to be slowly released. This increases the durability and strength of the glass and prevents breakage. The beads are then gently and thoroughly cleaned before they leave to go on their journey elsewhere.

Lastly, I am a Self Representing Artist. This means that I create my own Lampwork beads one at a time in my own studio. The SRA designation means that I have a high level of quality associated with my Lampwork and will always guarantee my beads. My identifying membership number is L34. When you buy from an SRA artist, you are directly supporting the artist. I would never sell mass produced glass beads as an SRA artist. Visit the SRA website to learn more about this project. http://www.self-representing-artist.com/

Thanks so much for looking at my work and for your appreciation of my little glass treasures!

During my career in diagnostic medicine I discovered lampwork beads at a bead show. I was mesmerized at the thought of moving molecules of glass and changing the shape through heat application. That's how science and art came together for me!
