From the classroom to your coffee table
“I like maps.” That was my response to the ‘what are you studying?’ question at my grad school orientation. Three words to sum up my academic interests while everyone else spouted off paragraph-sized sentences including words most people don’t know exist. This was my first inclination that maybe the ivory tower world wasn’t for me. Now, having finished grad school and dabbled in academia as a Visiting Assistant Professor (lucky enough to teach some amazing students!), I’m indulging my more creative side. I have a PhD and I use it everyday but not how most would expect. I've never been happier.
Deep down, everyone loves maps, because everyone has a strong sense of place - a connection to somewhere they lived, loved, traveled, got lost in, or simply had a moment. I salvage 'outdated' and vintage maps that may no longer suffice as up-to-date navigational or educational tools, but can still serve as artistic reminders to your connection to a place.
Each coaster set is made using the actual map, not a scanned color copy, so that each piece is one-of-a-kind (unless I happen upon another copy of the same vintage source). The map genealogy is featured - handwritten on the back of the coaster - so you know where and when the map came from.
Go on, look around. Here's hoping I can help you add a sense of place to your space.
'Where' are you looking for? :)

I have a PhD in Geography (cartography to be precise) but all I really want to do is rearrange your living room and design pieces that repurpose old wares or rethink traditional design elements. Every home space should be as unique as its dweller.
I'm a 4 year old Boston Terrier whose owners are from Alabama and Missouri, resulting in my geographic name of Ala-mo. Handcrafted is cool and all, but I just wanna go outside and play fetch.
