About

Beautiful objects with no guilt attached!

Hello and welcome to my shop! All items are handmade by me with love and care. If you need to ask me anything that isn't covered in my shop policies then please feel free to contact me at any time.

Almamae is named after two amazing women: my grandmas, Alma and Shirley Mae. These classy ladies inspire me every day and I hope their charm and poise works its way into the objects I make. The name Almamae also roughly translates in Spanish to "my soul" or "my soulmate" (alma me) for my incredible Chilean husband. I love breathing the art into everything I make for this shop!

I'm a visual artist and have been an art educator for 10 years. I also work as a freelance web/graphic designer as well as running another etsy shop for my illustration and photography: https://www.etsy.com/shop/PotterBescaArt. Bear with me as I'm currently in the process of separating my 2 shops, which used to all be housed under "Almamae Design."

ENVIRONMENTAL ETHICS:
Reduce. Reuse. Recycle. I believe in these principles and strive to make my shop "future friendly," from materials to powering the studio. All paper jewelry pieces are made of recycled or handmade (by me) paper. Whenever possible, I use found and recycled materials, non-toxic glues and coatings, green methods, and a bit of elbow grease to create one of a kind objects. To ship, I use recycled containers or handmade boxes made of recycled materials. My home studio includes a vermicomposting bin and energy efficient lighting to reduce waste. I am dedicated to decreasing the shop's carbon footprint even more as the business grows.

FAIR LABOR:
All work is handmade by the designer and prices reflect a fair hourly wage. As we grow, we are committed to maintaining fair wages and employing local artisans.

ABOUT THE DESIGNER:
I have been creating handmade jewelry and crafts for over 10 years and art for many more. My environmental ethic, love of color, and excitement about making things with my hands guide my work. After 3 years in Prague, Czech Republic, I've recently relocated to Los Angeles. Before moving to Europe and becoming a mom, I managed sending artists into schools and senior centers in Brooklyn NY to make learning fun. I've also worked as an environmental community organizer in Camden NJ, helped start a small public school in Brooklyn, campaigned for clean energy in Vermont, and directed art & environmental education programs in the Bronx. I earned my MFA in Visual Art from the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts at Washington University in St. Louis. In 2010, my essay on art & climate change, “Creating a Fourth Culture,” was published in 20UNDER40: Re-Inventing the Arts and Arts Education for the 21st Century. If I'm not making art, you can often find me baking a pie or chasing my toddler.

Frequently asked questions

Custom and personalized orders

I love making custom items! Please contact me and I will work with you to make a unique item just for you. I especially love working with brides to create one-of-a-kind jewelry that matches your personal style or sets as special gifts for your wedding party. ♥

Price and timeline will be determined by quantity of items requested, materials used, and the design of the items. For custom orders, payment needs to be issued prior to beginning work on the order.

Custom adjustments are possible on most items. Please see listing details and contact me if in doubt. Most chain lengths can be customized - simply leave me a note at checkout. Custom Requests are considered Final Sale.

Gift wrapping and packaging

I recycle everything to keep shipping costs as low as possible for my customers and use whatever materials necessary in assuring orders arrive safely. This includes, but is not limited to: used bubble wrap, recycled paper, and discarded boxes.

I also add a personal touch to make every package special, so don't be surprised if you find a handwritten note, special wrapping paper, or a small gift!

If you are purchasing this item as a gift and shipping directly to the recipient, please let me know the correct address.

If you would like to include a SPECIAL MESSAGE, please let me know when you place your order. I will also include gift wrapping for free.

Please note that in order to save paper, I normally do not include a printed invoice.

Care instructions

All jewelry should be taken off before showering, swimming, or exercising, and kept clean & dry in closed storage when not in use. Jewelry should be properly cleaned periodically to make it last longer.

STERLING SILVER: To clean Sterling Silver, scrub into a mound of baking soda + drop of water on your palm then rinse. You may also purchase silver jewelry cleaner.

GOLD FILLED: For Gold-Fill use dishwashing liquid + warm water or jewelry cleaner. Be careful not to tangle chain.

RAW BRASS: Raw Brass naturally oxidizes depending on the air and body chemistry, but brightens up quickly if you rub with lemon + water then rinse. Polishing with a soft nail buffer also works. It is not irreversibly tarnished, just temporarily oxidized.

Wedding Orders

I love creating unique wedding jewelry for brides, bridesmaids, and mothers! Please contact me to get started on stunning jewelry for your wedding. If you have specific styles or colors in mind already, you can let me know in that first message. Please also let me know your wedding date so that I can plan to have your jewelry in your hands well before your big day.

Damaged Items

If an item is damaged due to how it was handled through the course of shipping, contact me ASAP. If I have the items in my inventory to repair it (as some pieces are rare or unique) you can ship it back and I'll repair it for no additional charge. Before shipping back any damaged item, please contact me.

Damaged items must be reported within 2 days of receipt.

Depending on what specific part is broken, the item may be fixed, replaced, or (with buyer's consent) swapped with a similar piece. I will contact you with photos of any changes. While time for repair may vary, I will do my best to resolve the problem quickly and will contact you with any updates.

Review Before Purchasing

Please review item descriptions and photos thoroughly, and ask me any questions you may have. Please keep in mind that colors on your screen may vary slightly. Exact measurements are listed, so please check before purchasing. Photos are enlarged to show detail. Also check your chain length as standard lengths may be shorter or longer than your personal preference.

Returns can be costly and time consuming for all parties involved.

Metal Allergies

All metal components are base metal unless otherwise noted. Please let me know if you would like to upgrade to gold-fill or sterling silver.

If you need surgical steel or another specialty metal, please contact me as I do sometimes have those in stock.
