alpacakids is taking a short break

Note from shop owner I'm getting overwhelmed with the demands of my non-Etsy life right now, and I'm afraid I can't fill orders as quickly as I would like to. So I'm taking a break, but I will be back when life calms down! Check back around June 1. Thanks!

Beautifully made, impeccable quality and extremely helpful communication. I have ordered several sweaters from here and they are a family favorite. My 2 year old is has worn ones from her 5 year old sister and they look brand new- and they are farm girls who are not easy on clothes.

About

What do you get when you cross a new grandmother with an alpaca?

One magical day several years ago my two oldest daughters announced that they were both pregnant, and expecting babies just weeks apart.

I went into grandmother overdrive. I had always been a crafter, but suddenly everything I made took on new meaning. Then my brother, who owns an alpaca farm in the mountains of North Carolina, sent me some yarn that had been made of his alpaca fiber so I could make sweaters for the new babies. The softness and the beauty of the natural undyed fiber made me fall in love all over again with my crochet hook.

And with that, I found the niche that I had been looking for. Most of the time, I still use undyed alpaca fiber from my brother's farm when I knit or crochet. I am still making things for my amazing grandchildren (there are six of them now!) but now I get to create for other babies as well. The same love and care goes into each thing that I make as if I am making it for one of my own grandbabies.

My brother raises alpaca in the mountains of North Carolina. When I found out that I was going to become a grandmother I asked him to send me some yarn made of his alpaca fiber so that I could make sweaters for the babies who were on their way. Having never worked with alpaca before, I fell immediately in love. Alpaca fiber is softer, stronger, and warmer than wool and is hypoallergenic with none of the prickliness of some other fibers. It comes in a variety of natural colors and shades.

I use only natural alpaca fiber that has not been dyed. Each piece is created with the same care that I use when I crochet for my own grandbabies. Most of my yarn still comes from my brother's alpaca, raised organically with love and care on his farm, where each member of his herd is considered a valued pet. When I use yarn from other sources I still use only pure organic undyed alpaca. Occasional variations in color and texture are to be expected, but the photo that you see is the same item that you will receive.
