Hello, I am Alyssa Evelyn Bickett and my journey to where I am now has not been easy. I look at my life experiences past and present as motivation to move forward.
Since the age of fifteen I knew that I wanted to be a fashion designer. I believe it all started when I saw my grandmothers button collection. I remember asking her if I could sort through the buttons because she had them all in a huge jar. I was just so into the different shapes and colors that it lead me to look at clothing in a different way. For Christmas that year I asked for a sewing machine. On Christmas day my mother and grandmother did just that, they got me my very own sewing machine.
From there I would take whatever fabric I could get my hands on and made all sorts of one of a kinds. They did not look the greatest but I still wore them to school because I was proud of my creations.
Luckily, the high school I went to had fashion textile classes. That is when I learned more about the fashion industry and how to sew properly with a sewing machine. At the end of the semester we through a little fashion show to show off all the things we made. That is a day I will never forget.
I knew at that age exactly where I wanted to go to college. I actually only applied to one, and I got in. My first day of college was July 13th, 2015 and I did not know what to expect. I attended the Illinois Institute of Art in Chicago and graduated December of 2018. I learned so much about myself and who I am as a designer. We began by learning how to sketch properly, how to basic sew on an industrial machine and how to read patterns. But the most amazing thing was learning how to make my sketches come to life. We learned how to drape on mannequins and turn our creations into our own patterns. Everyone always asks me if I made the clothing they see in pictures and the answer is yes because my college taught us how to do it from the ground up. I was blessed with an amazing education and it has brought me to where I am today.
While being in college I was very lucky to have won many scholarships and be in fashion shows. In 2015 I won the Ai High School Scholarship for half my tuition paid. When I was a sophomore I looked for every opportunity to be in more scholarships. So I tried out for The Fashion Group International scholarship and went against all seniors. I did it for the experience but was shocked to hear I won! That is when my confidence in myself grew as a person and designer. It was a sign I had something inside me that others needed to see so I tried out for our schools fashion show. I participated from 2016-2018, and finally seeing your clothing on people was the most rewarding feeling I have ever felt.
Once I graduated I knew what I wanted to do and that was to continue my fashion journey. So here I am today starting my own brand Alyssa Evelyn and launching my accessories on Etsy. 2019 was a big year for me because I showcased my senior collection Flowing Midnight in Chicago Fashion Week and got into my dream scholarship Driehaus Design Initiative Award. I am still working on clothing but for now I am taking my skill to different levels. For now I am focusing on accessories and creating plush kitties. This is only the beginning for me but I am so honored to have all of you as my support by guiding me in the right direction.
