How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Digital World
Like many of the Mompreneurs out there, my Etsy shop began as a hobby, and eventually turned into a full time business.
A few years ago, I had a stressful corporate job, a 2.5 hour commute and a 1 year old son who didn't get the time he deserved from his Mom. After much soul searching, I left my job, hoping to find work that was less demanding and closer to home.
During my time off I started drawing. I have loved to draw since I was a kid. In fact, during my teenage years drawing and painting were more of an obsession than a hobby. But I hadn't had time to create anything in years. Drawing felt like getting in touch with a part of myself I'd lost. It also took my mind off worrying about not having a pay check!
My husband (who is an amazing digital illustrator!) encouraged me to try drawing digitally. Maybe I could look for a job in graphic design? I gave it a shot, and I posted a few of my digital drawings on Etsy. After a few weeks, one sold! I think I made $3 in my first 3 months, but I was absolutely thrilled. I kept drawing, and kept adding, and eventually it snowballed into a full time business.
Since then, I've become a top seller on Etsy. I've also established my own website (MandyArtMarket.com) and blog, and I'm a successful seller on a number of other websites including Creative Market, Teachers Pay Teachers and The Hungry Jpeg.
It's lots of hard work, but I'm so lucky to do something I love. And hey - no more commute! :)
