Announcement   As some of you may know I lost my beloved cow Steppin and my good Studio cat Singer this spring, They were both almost 16 years old. It left me open to grief and awakening my spirit to more keenly see my beautiful surroundings with a sharper vision and appreciation.

As if a divine gift, a lovely pony mare was given to me. Vanilla the llama did not care for her at first but now accepts her and watches Star wherever she goes in the spring meadows rich with the new grasses, Star is bringing me back to my days with horses I have loved from days gone by. Remember, our farm was named from my good Morgan mare, Amity.

I have been given new spirit by my pony Star and she has renewed my spirit with inspiration for the summer batik I am about to begin. My dye buckets are out now after a long winter and cold freezing April. I am ready to flow with the wax and be splattered with dye!

About

Farm girl meets the Internet

The first big challenge for me was that having worked on a farm for 30something years, I was tuned into animals, plants, fencing, nature and had no experience with computers! It was a slow process learning, complicated by the fact that our Internet connection was very poor.

I met a young woman in nearby Glens Falls, New York, Kate Austin-Avon, who has exceptional patience and skills who helped me learn how to set up my Etsy shop, prepare and upload images, set up a newsletter, website and more.

The other challenge was organizing my day. On the farm my day was pre scheduled to care for the animals with a mid day break in which projects and household needs could be worked on. (I still work on farms but not full time and they are not mine, but I still enjoy working with animals).

I graduated from Massachusetts College of Art, in Boston and went on to study printmaking at the Museum School of Fine Art also in Boston as well as studying in Rome, Italy for a summer. It was later in the Berkshire hills that I fell in love with the batik process and also my husband, Richard. Richard whisked me away after his cows broke in with my horses. We searched together for a farm and settled on one in Washington County, New York, Amity Farm, where we had a jersey cow dairy. Many beautiful images accumulated over those years where the cows were rotationally grazed for 6 months of the year at the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains. Batik is a flowing sensous and soothing medium that is an ancient method of painting on fabric with wax and dyes. A batik may have up to a dozen or more wax and dyebaths before the wax is removed. The results are always magic! Much of my work relates to fantasy, mythology, and primordial themes. The farm has given inspiration to portray horses, cows, sheep, barns, fields and mountain views (farmscapes).
