Love the house portrait! It is so adorable and well done. I don't think my parents have ever loved a gift as much as they loved this. Such a charming design style! Great communication as well. Thanks Amy!!

Always remember your memories

We've always been a creative family.

So it was no surprise when I painted a portrait of my parents' (Sue & Ray) house, as a gift. What was a surprise was how much I enjoyed making it - it was relaxing and a high at the same time. Better than a great meal and glass of wine! Amy Brearley & Family on Etsy was born.

Appreciation for the design, textures and color of architecture drove me to major in Architecture at the Rhode Island School of Design (admittedly as did the availability of a studio in the major - I was lonely working out of my apartment!). The absolute height of my inspiration comes from the original Shaker architecture and design - the simplicity, the colors, the true meaning of form follows function all strike a chord.

My goal for my artwork and style is to convey the same straightforward, clean, honest feeling. For some reason, a tongue-in-cheek, down-home quirkiness seems to creep into all of my pieces. I try to use that folk - or even naive - quality, to portray what a house, a home or other important place feels like.

After lots of custom requests, I started painting family and pet portraits (listing coming soon!). From the first day, I've used watercolor for its flexibility and depth of color. The "happy accidents" - such as pigments not mixing totally and creating colorful textures - just add to the personality of paintings.

My parents (not surprisingly) share a similar aesthetic and belief in the importance of capturing the feeling of important experiences. My dad, Ray, has painted for years, and recently has become a photographer. He loves to capture images of vintage base ball (yes, two words!), played today based upon the rules and values of yore. And my mom, Sue, has take an innate sense of design and now paints as well. She doesn't seem to appreciate being called Grandma Moses, though. Both contribute prints and limited-edition objects d'art to the shop.

We'll soon be launching a line of wedding paper - invites, response cards and the like. I imagine that much like portraits, creating such personal, important art means I will have the opportunity to connect, for just one sweet moment, with my clients. It's such an amazing experience, to see and understand the feelings that drive memories. It's an honor to be a part for a very short time!
