About

Amy Johnson Designs - One Bead at a Time

Amy Johnson Designs.
My bead woven jewelry designs are created to celebrate the unique style of the individual. Each piece is handmade by the artist, one bead at a time, using the highest quality materials and attention to detail.
My jewelry combines materials in glass, stone, crystals, pearls, and seed beads to create intricate layers of color and texture. The stone cabochons are cut and polished from rough slabs, encased within a pocket of tiny seed beads, and then incorporated into a piece with my own unique bead weaving and bead embroidery stitches. I use a variety of techniques and materials to ‘paint with beads’. Creative use of color is a signature of my work. Each piece has its' own unique character to celebrate the individual style of the wearer.
My background in tapestry weaving and graphic design adds another dimension to the process and my beadwork reflects my love of both color and symmetry. Sometimes I take a very geometric approach to bead weaving with an emphasis on pattern and order, building a cubic or octagonal base and then embellishing the structure with tiny seed beads and crystals. The other side of my brain enjoys taking inspiration from a polished stone cabochon or a sparkling crystal and building a design around it in a more freeform approach, allowing the materials to inspire me. I am influenced by the Art Deco and Art Nouveau periods as well as Native American cultures. I have learned to embrace the frustrations involved in creating a new piece of jewelry art and accepting that this is a natural part of the design process. I enjoy the calm repetition of attaching one bead at a time as I watch my design come to life.
Along with winning numerous awards for my jewelry, my designs have been published in the “Bead and Button” and “Beadwork” Magazines, “Jewelry Designs with Art Glass Beads” and "500 Art Necklaces" by Lark Publishing. I have also participated in the international competition,’Artprize Grand Rapids’ for four years, and was a 'Bead Dreams' Finalist four years.

I began working with beads in 2004 and with a background in tapestry weaving and graphic design, I found it to be a perfect fit. Most of the stone cabochons in my pieces were cut and polished by my husband Tom.
