Celestial Pottery Origin Story

It was staff night at the pottery studio where I worked, and I grabbed a plate to paint from the pile. Several glazing techniques ran through my head...splash, masking, caps, fleckling. Also perpetually on my mind: my love of sci-fi. More specifically, the spacey interactive fiction game, "Lifeline," which involved saving an astronaut stranded on a moon. So as many once dreamed of putting a man on the Moon, I dreamed of putting a moon on a plate. I splashed, masked, capped, flecked that plate until I saw a moon appear on its ceramic surface. At that moment, I knew I had to make more. Thanks to the help of my boss at the pottery studio, I learned how to turn my love of painting space dishes into a business.

After several years painting these pieces and watching the world change, the meaning behind the work has become clearer. I want people to see the beauty in exploring and contemplating the unknown. And I want them to think about it while having their morning coffee, or relaxing with a glass of wine. I don’t think you need to stand in a gallery to have those kinds of moments. A lot of people feel uncomfortable with the social progress that’s transforming our world right now, and I hope my work is a gentle reminder that new and different worlds shouldn’t be so scary.
