Welcome to and the carrot came up!

In our shop you will find:
• Toys and play sets that respect each child as a competent learner.
• Natural materials that engage all of a child’s senses.
• Resources that support parents and educators who want to incorporate loose parts into their home or curriculum.

"In any environment, both the degree of inventiveness and creativity, and the possibility of discovery, are directly proportional to the number and kind of variables in it." - Simon Nicholson

Ray-Ann and Lindsay are a mother-and-daughter team living and crafting in Nelson, BC.

Ray-Ann’s story: I have been working in the Early Childhood Education field for 35 years. When I was a younger educator, I used teacher-initiated activities or themes as a way of guiding how I would engage the children each day. As seasons changed, the art work would correspond and so would group time songs and stories. I don’t necessarily think that using this style of teaching children is entirely the wrong approach, because children are born to play and learn and will! However, I have now come to the point in my experience and observations to understand that children are capable of constructing their own learning. When they do, they are motivated. When they are motivated, incredible and amazing learning can happen. I want to be a facilitator for that kind of learning and a co-constructor of their play. I have been influenced by Reggio Emilia and Waldorf-inspired approaches, the RIE philosophy, and loose parts and play-based theory. I believe young children who are still exploring with all of their senses are receiving a much richer and more meaningful learning experience with natural materials made of wool, metal, wood, cardboard, fabric and in some instances glass. It is my pleasure and passion to create toys for children that support and respect their natural learning abilities.

Lindsay’s story: As a parent of a 5-year old I get to observe my daughter’s competence, imagination and creativity on a daily basis. I am excited to spend time creating toys and resources with my mom (and sometimes my daughter!) to support other parents who are interested in empowering their own children through this kind of play.

Darrell is my wonderful husband of 34 years! We enjoy creating handmade children's toys together. One of his favorite ways to spend time is in his workshop making wood furniture, restoring items and making children's toys. I love how his creativity and mine work together so well. Wood and Wool.

My Brother in Law is one of the most creative people I know. He puts a lot of time and passion into his creations. He usually sources his materials as he hikes in the area where we live. His fences, gates and bird houses are a natural fit and accessory for my play mats.
