Creating connections through art
I am very much inspired by anything vintage or old. It is the uniqueness of a particular item and the visual appeal of a by-gone era that I find intriguing. Every thrift store find or antique treasure holds a story that is calling to be explored. Similarly, the faces appearing in old found photos from the past have stories yet to explore and this is my attempt when I create a scene or mood inspired by an old photo. I also collect old yearbooks as they are filled with amazing faces and are a "time capsule" of the hair and clothing styles of the time.
I will start a painting by first finding a photo that inspires me. I especially like black and white photos that I can re-interpret with my own colors. I will often start with a sketch on tracing paper, refining it until I have an image I am pleased with. An underpainting of red or burnt sienna is my next step, and when this is dry I sketch the image onto the canvas and start filling in colors and shading. I allow the painting to morph as needed. I might add a background that reflects the state of mind of the person(s) in the painting, or sometimes an animal is added to create interest. I am often pleasantly surprised by the story that reveals itself when I am finished.
When someone appreciates or connects in some way to my art, it creates a bridge between us and I feel a kinship and connection to that person. I can't imagine a better way to satisfy my need to share a unity with others than through my art.
