About

Exploring Small Art

As I began my active art career, I painted and drew "large" along with most of the artists in the greater Palm Springs Area. I worked through several years of large and discovered that I like small, miniatures to be exact. A true miniature is 24 to 25 square inches or smaller. I also liked using pyrography (woodburning) for drawing on wood and paper. I concentrate on miniatures and want to marry the pyrography with miniatures. I use oil and colored pencil as well as augmenting the pyrography with colored pencil. Pyrography has been around for over 3000 years and now is being promoted as a fine art. I was a recipient of a Pufffin Foundation grant to pursue pyrography as a fine art and to chronicle Joshua Trees on Joshua Tree wood. Miniatures once popular before cameras found a limited amount of interest with the exception of a few artists that practiced the skills of miniature painting. It now receives world wide recognition with a large contingent of exceptional artists showing all over the world. Miniatures must meet the same criteria as fine art, be under 25 square inches and meet a 1:6 scale. The detail is examined uinder magnifying glass for its refinement.
