Beautiful! Pieces are evenly cut and stamped perfectly. I'm pretty much addicted to this shop.
Whole Grain Flair sprung from the eclectic lifestyle of Lora Barnhiser.
One day, I sat down in my studio to create a leather pendant for myself. I returned the next day and the next. Before I realized it, I had created more than I would ever need. I decided to re-open my etsy shop so that I could share my pendants with the world!
(In a not too far-off life, I created drawings for my etsy shop. Something I still enjoy along with many other artistic forms.) I now also have a second etsy shop for my illustrations :
About the process:
Click on the "blog" link to the right to see a quick stop-motion video of my studio in process--->
When I go into my studio, I usually don’t have anything in mind to create. I look at my leather scraps and let them speak to me. Often I can begin to see a shape in the edges of a scrap. I go from there snipping and cutting away. The few times I do have something in mind, the plan usually takes a u-turn and goes about the journey on it’s own way. I’ve always enjoyed puzzles and building things. This is probably why creating the shapes and fitting them together is so fulfilling. I never know what will come from my studio time!
Photographing the work I create has been almost as fun as creating the items. I love seeing my work through the lens of the camera. It is very exciting, because when I view it that way, I’m seeing it through your eyes.
About the artist:
I grew up in a small country town and was always surrounded by nature. My playmates were mostly rough and tumble boys, and so even though I’m harmless, I always have admired a tough looking female. As a girl, I was shy and the image of a strong woman has usually been not far off in my mind. This is probably why my favorite Halloween costume is a biker! I love the powerful feeling when I wear my black leather boots and jacket.
For me, leather has always been the perfect symbol for toughness. It seems to stand the test of time. No other material has the perfect balance of nature and butt kick.
My style and artistic influences are many. They include:
*Nature (Growing up in nature, and living a life of hiking and camping.)
*My time as an Art student (Bachelor of Fine Arts- Bowling Green State University)
*The many music festivals and concerts my husband and I attend. (I have always been drawn to the earthy wares that I see men and women sporting as they jam to their favorite tunes.
*My students (I am a full time Art teacher. The diversity of my students and their many artistic styles never cease to inspire and amaze me.)
*My life here in the beautiful desert of Phoenix. (Frank Lloyd Wright is a prominent historical figure in this area. His work aligns with many of my ideas.)
Owner, Maker, Designer, Curator
I find leather to be an interesting mix of earthy elegance and rustic butt-kick.
