From the Plains to the Coast
This shop features the work of several British Columbian Indigenous artists. We work especially close with Native jeweler Justin Rivard. Justin's first few years were spent learning the complex Northwest Coast aesthetic through trips to the library. It was not until 2001 that Justin became a full-time jeweler, after the demand for his work became so great that there was simply not enough time left for a day job. He spent much of the nineties honing his craft, focusing on jewellery-making, and working in B.C. art galleries in an attempt to understand the ins-and-outs of the art world: "My style is a combination of influences. I was born and have lived my whole life on the west coast of British Columbia, but my Native ancestry is Cree. I fluctuate between West Coast and Plains styles. Each offers its own unique quality, stories, and history, and it’s impossible for me to limit myself to just one type of design."
