Margaret Crowley-Kiggins: A Fine Artist Who Creates Fine Jewelry
I have always used my hands to make things. I started at a very young age.
My mother was a classical pianist and my father was a marketing executive for an electronic tools firm. My parents entertained a lot and I loved it. I loved seeing my mother in her red velvet dress adorned with her sparkly rhinestone jewelry! She was so beautiful.
I used to try on her jewelry and play movie star.
Fast forward a number of years, when I was a living working artist, fresh out of school. I was involved with an artists cooperative gallery and began making jewelry in order to keep my sales up. It seemed that artist created jewelry was a hot selling item and we all were making something! The weirder the better!
Currently I love to accessorize and find very expensive jewelry unimaginative and cost prohibitive. But the problem is that I love quality and abhor cheap schlocky accessories. Plus I don't care much at all for symmetry. I prefer the more intriguing asymmetry with balance. I could never find anything I liked until I came across various higher end jewelry designers in exclusive department stores like Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom. It was still difficult to find asymmetry with balance, but they had the quality and cost I preferred.
I made the decision to try my hand at making exactly what I envisioned. I wore my creations and people who didn't even know me would stop me and ask about my necklace! When I told them that I made it, they ALL said: "Make me one- I'll pay you!"
So my shop is born.
