Locate the mainspring. It is between the '10' and the face center on a pocket watch, and between the "1" and the face center on a wrist watch. When loose the coils are relaxed into their outer area. At about 10 twists you will still see space between the coils. At 15 or so twists when you can see slight space between the coils is fully wound. Stop before you feel resistance, to prevent the mainspring from becoming stuck in a tight knot at its center. You can try to loosen a tight coil by giving it several good shakes. Grasp the watch firmly (so as not to drop it) and 'snap' it several times. You can also try tapping the side of the watch on a thick note pad to free the tight coil and start the watch ticking again.
