About ArtistDakota

Sales 2,023
On Etsy since 2012

Painter and maker of all things magical.

My name is Dakota Daetwiler. I was born and raised in California, but now reside on the East Coast with my family, 10 chickens and 10 ducks. I am a completely self taught artist.

I have been a professional Oil Painter now for over a decade, and have skills in many other artistic categories such as: illustrations (children's books and more), stained glass sculptures, clay sculptures, portrait painting, jewelry making and more. My passion to this day remains with oil painting on canvas, but from time to time I love to branch out into the other categories listed.

If you are interested in having something custom made for your collection, feel free to email me anytime.

I owned two beautiful galleries in California between 2013 and 2020 where I displayed and sold my work. With the start of Covid, I chose to close my studio and work from home where I live now, in Maine. Now I do shows around the country and sell my work online.

In 2021 I was diagnosed with a pretty severe auto immune disease called Ankylosing Spondilitis which is wreaking havoc on my body and attacking my brain. I am determined to remain optimistic and keep painting and creating as long as I possibly can. Any and all sales are so appreciated and help me with my high medication and specialist costs.

Thank you for being here and taking the time to read this.

Please follow me on social media for updates, too. I post on there most frequently if new work is available. Just search for "Paintings by Dakota Daetwiler" on Facebook, IG, TikTok or Youtube.

Thank you for helping me make the world a bit more magical, one painting at a time.

Welcome! Thank you for checking out my paintings and creations.

Now for the boring stuff...

I try to describe my items very thoroughly, and I understand that sometimes you may still have questions. If so, please feel free to email me anytime BEFORE you purchase, I can send you more pictures, videos, etc. and do my best to answer any remaining concerns you may have. ( info [!at] paintingsbydakota.com ) or message me on Etsy,

I do not accept returns at this time, with the only exception being if something is damaged during shipping. If this happens I can send you a label to return the item and once I have it back I will send you out a new one. I will also need you to send images of the damaged box and product so I can file a claim. If you are unable to provide this, I can not process a replacement for you.

I do not cover mail theft, this has to be dealt with at your local police department and at your local post office.

Any purchases over the amount of $250 are shipped with signature required upon delivery (and always if it is an original painting, even if it's less money.) This is to try to avoid any theft, and I thank you for understanding. If you won't be home, have it sent to a business or somewhere that someone will be able to sign for it.

If you are unsatisfied with anything you purchased for another reason, please send me a message and give me a chance to make it right before leaving a review. If it is something that I missed or messed up on, I am likely very willing to exchange or replace it within reason.

Buyer must pay shipping on exchanges.

Whew! Thanks for reading all of that...
-Dakota

Frequently asked questions
Care instructions

How do I care for an original painting?

I tell all my customers the same thing: keep it away from "extremes." What that means is no heat, no moisture, and no direct sun exposure is the best way to care for a painting. Use care when handling it, do not touch it or let others touch it as the oils from your hands can cause deterioration. In most cases, I would recommend not putting originals behind glass (like in frames) because they canvas can mold.

Climates differ greatly depending on where you live and hundreds of other factors, so I would urge you to take a minute and read about it here: How To Care For An Original Painting

Care instructions

How do I care for my canvas print?

Canvas prints are a fun way to have my art in your homes. That being said, they can be more finicky than an original painting. Canvas prints are fragile, and can be scratched, damaged, sun bleached, mold, or break very easily. Please take care of your canvas prints, and if shipping them always use extra padding and get insurance. I would recommend the above again, keep them away from extremes: no heat, no cold, no moisture, no direct sunlight. Hanging a print above a fireplace or furnace is a sure way to ruin it, and fast.

Wholesale availability

Do you offer wholesale?

95% of my items are whole saleable. Just contact me and I can tell you if it would be a good fit, and the minimum orders. My signed prints sell really well, and make a great addition to gift shops!

Now that I own an original of yours, can I make prints or reproduce it?

No. The artist ALWAYS maintains ownership of all copyrights of work produced. What that means is: buying an original painting does not mean you own the reproduction rights (or copyright.) My work may not be used in any way without my expressed written permission. Please email me if you have questions about this or want to let me know about someone using my work without my permission.

What is the difference between a painting and a "print"?

An original painting is the piece I created by hand using paints and brush. Originals are one of a kind, and will hold their value (if not increase in value) over time. They also last forever, as long as they are taken care of.

A print is a piece of canvas that has been printed by a machine. You are in essence purchasing a copy of my work. Most prints are hand signed by me and numbered, although not all. It varies by cost and size. I can make prints of just about any piece I have created in many different sizes and styles (paper prints, giclee canvas prints, framed prints, etc.) Prints are much much less expensive than the original paintings and are a more economical way to have my art in your home. Most people can not tell the difference.

Will you design me a tattoo or a logo?

No. Put simply, I am at a point in my career where if it doesn't bring me joy, I don't create it. These things are not my cup of tea. I would suggest checking out a local digital artist for either one of these, I work with traditional paint and canvas and it isn't a good fit for these types of jobs.

I just got my item and it's damaged. Now what?

Just send me images of the package and the damaged item. I can file a claim and get you a new one sent out quickly. Please do this as soon as you receive it, as I can not help after 7 days.
Depending on what you got (like for original paintings or large canvas orders, etc.) I may ask that you send it back before sending out a new one.

Why are some of my items missing?

Sometimes when you order multiple things some get shipped sooner than others. Depending on if I have them in stock, if I have to get them made (like with my sweatshirts, bags, etc.) they might be manufactured somewhere else in the US and shipped to you straight from them. If you ever have any questions though, please reach out through the Etsy app.
