This scarf is beautiful and light. I bought it as a Christmas gift for a future nurse and I truly believe she'll love it as much as I do.

About

Inspired by science, expressed in paint

I've been a professional artist for over a decade, selling my work at festivals and in galleries. I was intrigued by biological images, and I painted lots of them, but I wanted to connect with a geekier audience than I was finding at festivals. In 2010, I decided to try expanding online. Things started a little slowly, but once I was featured in some science blogs, word started getting around about the woman who paints cells and viruses.

Once I got connected with some scientists and bloggers on twitter, a great dialogue began, with ideas and images pouring in and artwork pouring out.

Friends had been suggesting to me for years that I put my artwork on fabric, so in 2012, I decided to try making some scarves based on my paintings. Luckily, my friend Alison was already producing gorgeous scarves for museums and high end shops. She helped guide me through the process, and now scarves are a big part of my business.

The scarves are the only things in my shop not fully handmade by me. I paint the picture, get it photographed professionally, photoshop it to the right dimensions, and have the image digitally printed on silk. It's a fairly long and expensive process, which is why I can't take orders for one-of-a-kind scarves.

In addition to the scarves, I've been making little paintings in petri dishes for two years now. They're great as Christmas ornaments or just to hang on a wall.

In addition to painting sciencey stuff, I blog weekly about science and art at TheFinchandPea.com, a group blog focusing on the intersection of science and culture, and I tweet @artologica.

I love to paint. So instead of painting one picture and making loads of prints, my preferred mode is to sell that one and make another. So each piece is unique.

This is cool because you own the only one in existence : )
